i installed a 2x1 offy and some short tube headers, got the thing tuned running amazing but it feels a little off. i know its a slant but it feels slow for a slant. old crackhead coworker suggested less gas and to check timing, timings on the dot and i got both carter bbs 3,1/4 turn out on the fuel mixture. the other screws im not sure on but im wondering where to start so i can smoke my tires off here soon.

Timing curve, base/total job #1.....what #'s are You using/running? Valve adjust & compression next, since You stated "tuned running amazing", I'll assume those have been checked....but still...

Please elaborate "on the dot" as already asked. Also, I'd be extremely surprised if any mild slant 6 would smoke the tires.

For tuning the carburetors, I'd recommend both reading the spark plugs to make sure fueling is consistent across the cylinders, and if there's any chance you can fit it in the budget, a wideband AFR gauge. These gauges make tuning much easier and let you see at a glance where you are with your fuel.

So it runs amazing but it runs poorly.

Maybe less time spent listening to crackheads.

timings on the dot

Uh...yeah, what dot?

This is…meaningless. For one thing, that screw you're thinking of adjusts only the idle mixture. For another, adjusting it isn't a matter of a specific number of turns, but even if it were, 3-1/4 is more than they usually wind up at, suggesting something's wrong.

Making a dual carb setup work well is highly dependent on both carbs being identical (not just "two Carter BBSs"; there were many, many different BBSs with significantly different calibrations over a buncha years). And the carbs have to be in functionally flawless condition, which is difficult even just one-carb-at-a-time, let alone two.

And there's a lot more to tuning the engine than pointing a timing light and going "yup that's on the dot".

And shorty headers aren't usually a top pic for a street-driven Slant-6.

And there's no info on the rest of the car. How many miles on the engine? What's the exhaust system configuration? What transmission, what rear axle ratio, what tire size?

It kinda sounds like you tossed some nifty-sounding/looking parts at an otherwise-stock car and expected a big boost in zoom. That really isn't howw it works.

forgot to add it has a hog a$$ cam, thats on the dot

you could quit being a c0ck about everything and give some advice. on the dot means its good. jacka ss leave it at that my lord
You come here asking for help. I asked for specifics with timing and get this response ^^^^ Classy. My car runs great! You made the list.

Ok he’s fairly new I’ll give a chance. When you say timing is good. What does that mean to you are you referring to 10 degrees BTDC or you just saying it’s good? How did you make this determination? Did you use a timing light and factory manual to set timing. When you say vacuum is good did you actually put a gauge on manifold vacuum and determine a reading? How did you get to 3.5 turns out and figure that’s where idle circuit needs to be.

In this country we were told unleaded fuel would get rid of the smog. It didn't....
