So I decided to do a little bit of porting on a set of 80s smog 318 heads. Not looking for massive HP gains as im running a hughes whiplash cam which I like but I regret not cleaning up the heads when I built the motor.

Here are some pictures of the intake side ports I have started and am waiting on a selection of burrs I ordered as well as some sanding wheels to smooth it out better. I laid a 318 metal type gasket over the head and marked the ports to size. Even though I am running an Air gap manifold, and running a intake gasket that matches the intake, those size ports are too big and require too much material to be taken off to match. Does not matter anyway as I am keeping the 1.78 intakes.

I just wanted to make a post with my progress to make sure Im not screwing something up as this is my first time attempting this. Any tips are welcomed. 318Willrun's videos have helped me a bit.

looks like a lot of core shift to deal with but it does make a difference

I'm trying not to take too much and risk thinning the push rod bosses. But those stock port shapes are just horrible.

Is that the gasket you're going to use? Before you take a cutter to it verify the size and location is correct. How does that gasket look against the intake?

Here is the gasket I am running but I will not open them to that port size. Way to big and no point with 1.78 valves. Im just looking to clean them from casting flash, match the bowls to the seats and shape the ports a little bit better. as you could see the intake ports were not even uniform shape.

Here is the gasket I run, obviously 360 port size, but it matches up to the air gap intake and is a better quality gasket then the cheap metal ones.

I did and you missed my point. I should have stated make sure the gasket was correct in both port window size and port location. Gaskets are cheap, heads are not and both can be manufactured poorly.

That looks really good. Never been a fan of matching the 318 to the bigger port. RUN IT

The only thing I wouldn’t do is smooth it out. Burr finish it if you can, or use a stone. Leave it rough.

I like what you are doing, just don’t think making is smooth is a good decision.

Really? I always thought smooth was better?

It is on the exhaust side.

I like smooth on the exhaust side. On the intake side, texture helps the air/fuel atomize. You don't want "burrs" or "flash" on the intake side, but "grind stone" texture is ok.

Actually, even a polished exhaust port and chamber isn’t a good thing. You want some carbon to build up on the port and chamber.

Darin Morgan (as just one example) covered this in the last webinar in some detail.

Actually, you WANT a burr finish IF you can get it right. It’s not easy, and you can’t always copy how someone else does it.

A few pictures of a burr finish that’s close to being done. I had some touch up to do after theses were taken.
