My Dad was a Johnson mechanic back in the day. My hometown NAPA store also held the Johnson outboard consignment. He worked on about any brand you can think of at one time

"On a whim" I bought a little Merc 3.3 outboard at the St Vinnys. Brought it home, clamped it to a shelf out back, and fired on the second pull LMAO (Only ran it a few seconds) I didn't take a photo, it's like this one

I probably won't run it in water as it's getting so cold out. Drain the lower gearbox and screw with it in the spring

Well, Del, now you have a reason to buy a hole in the water.

That would be perfect on a 12’ boat for fishing.

I've been looking at cheap 12' boats on CL. Just what I need....for winter....LOL

I still have my Dad's somerwhere around a '38 Johnson I think it's a 4.8 hp twin. This was made before recoil starters. I think it needs a lower shaft seal, and maybe a shaft.

          Looks exactly like this one

buddy had a Johnson 65 on the back of a 13" tri-hull. Ran great, fast enough for a lake boat on the ocean. Got us out of the harbor and 2 miles down the strand and the thing seizes up in a matter of 3 seconds. we try and start it but the electric starter is just clicking onto a frozen ring gear. We throw the 25 foot anchor overboard and it just hangs off the b oat like a sinker. 20 minutes later, it starts up out of the blue and we race it back to the harbor until it seizes again. WTF...long story short, HArbor assist tows us in, we get it home and I find the lower drive is completely empty of oil and the drive shaft needle bearings have welded themselves together and onto the race. He didnt know there was no oil down there, never checked. Old boat was 2 months new to him and it was the first time out.

Del, you could build a boat from scratch. Sounds like a great winter project. We all know you would have no trouble wiring it.

Well "the saga" continues..........I just can't hep it. I am intending to go over to Spokamentro tomorrow to look at a little "Sea King" 12 ft boat and non running motor for 325. "We'll see.............."

Unfortunately he took the ad down and all I saved was this one screenshot

Consider a flat bottom boat. Able to go in much shallower water and much more stable. A buddy of mine had one that was 16’ when we graduated high school. I’ve been on the water my entire life in everything from kayakes to 36’ Fountains. I had the most fun of my life on that 16’ John boat shooting up creeks and being a river rat.

                    Found some more photos:
He said he hauled it "no problem" in the bed of a Ranger
Turns out Sea King outboards were manufactured (for Wards) by several different companies, so at this point I have no idea what is "under the hood."

The general styling indicates it might have been made by Gale which then was OMC / Johnson Evinrude

In those days Gale/ Johnson/ Evinrude were similar or alike under the hood. Got 'er home It's in really nice shape for something this old (1959) Stopped by the Post Falls St Vincent and bought some life vests!!! Boat will likely stay like this for winter. I'll take it downtown Mon-Tues and see what needs to be done "if" title/ registration, etc

Notice that the hull is not all beat up from bonkin' against rocks or docks!!!
                      IMG_1693cs.JPG

Seller "figures" the thing was stored indoors unused for years. JUST LOOK at the original decals. He did redoo the oak trim

That’s a nice boat. Should be pretty stable side to side and has enough bow to slice the waves.

There were hundreds of small motors way back when.
Went to a boat show years ago,the real old stuff impressed me more than the new fangled stuff.

LOL I don't plan on doing much tight manuvering. Remember, tho, some outboards (the little Merc and the old Johnson) will swivel clear around 360, so creating thrust past 90* will "force" that issue some LOL

My hope is just to get out on some small local lakes and putt around, enjoy a nice day. Maybe take a lunch and the camera gear. I'm (not yet) even interested in fishing, that may change.

I've been thinking of transporting this. As long as this little trailer is free, it will work. I was also thinking of a simple ramp and simple winch to get it into the pickup. I'm not strong enough, anymore, at least with my ribs, to "skid" it into the pickup. That might change when my ribs get better. I lifted the stern today with no real problem.
