My Dart Swinger Project!

-
Ok got some more done got a bunch of little stuff unbolted and out of the way so I can sand. I got my steering column out so so I can work on it easier and dont have to sand around it. Got the gas pedal out. And sanded on the engine bay a little more. I found a really good clean sample of the original color behind the gas pedal stud.
Figure now would be a good time to replace the wiper gaskets while they are easy to get to.

Looking good. Anytime you can remove stuff rather than tape it off you always end up with a better job in the end. It takes a little more time and effort but is worth it. Get some aluminum tape to cover up the holes to the interior so you dont end up with blast media in there, also cover up yoyr windshield and chrome trim so the sandblast doesnt eff it up. Cant wait to see it in primer.

Got some more striping done today. I blasted and sanded until I ran out of media lol I gotta go back to the local hardware store and get some more. I'm using the cheapest stuff I can find its coal slag "black magic" media. It's like 6 bucks a bag. Seems to be working good. My compressor Is getting a work out.

Unless you intend to replace that windshield and stainless trim, you need to tape cardboard over it with heavy tape, otherwise that sandblasting will ruin it in short order. Also if you put a plastic tarp under it, you can recover a decent amount of your media and reuse it multiple times.

Thanks I didn't even think of that. I cover it up before I continue!

Got the base today to go with my spi primer and clear!! Cant wait to spray this pig!

Take your time prepping it. Make sure its as perfect as you can get it before you spray it. Remember the base goes on dull, also thin light even sprayed on base coats look better under the clear.

If you have not read my SPI forum disaster with the Duster look for it. Be very careful with Motobase over SPI. Make sure the epoxy is completely dry. There is a 7 day window (if not in the sun) so wait at least 3-4 days before you shoot the Motobase.

Crazing.

Thanks I can't really see the picture good and it wont let me blow it up. what did it do?
Barry said to spray the base 24 hours after I sprayed the epoxy without sanding.

It crazed the base. Be very careful doing that.... I agree if you put a very thin sealer coat of epoxy on 24 hours before. I layed on 2 coats of epoxy (not thinned for a sealer) and it has not evaporated all the SPI reducer which reacted with the Motobase reducer causing issues.

That is great to know thank you.

I got some more work done today. The old 7.25 is disconnected. I got the 8.8 and started stripping it. I did make a mistake and forgot to unhook my ebrake cables lol. I started pulling and it wouldn't come out then I realized it was still connected Haha
I pulled the drums and stopped there for today I will get the cables off and pull out out tomorrow.

There is always that one nut that has to be a PITA! The everything else came off easy I was surprised. Although these ubolts have been replaced before so they wasnt super rusty but this one made it all the way to the end and got stuck I ended up bringing out the breaker bar and it twisted it off.

Keep a plugg'n at her.....
I'm back and forth about dropping the tank idk if its necessary or not I dont wont to mess up the sending unit or break anything trying to get it out. The next step is a wire wheel and a thick coat of rustoleum black underneath. Hopefully next week I'm gonna try and finish the engine bay and spray some paint.

If it's sat a long time (like years...), I would drop the tank and flush it, or replace it.

It has sat for a long time. But I drained all the gas out of it when it was parked it has been completely empty. I know that doesnt mean anything. Condensation and dirt and bugs still get in there.

Got a little more done this morning. The rearend is out the driveshaft is disconnected I got the old brake hose off luckily I got it off without damaging the brake line I'm gonna reuse the line from there to the firewall and replace the hose which has to be done anyway with the new rearend. Started cleaning on the bottom some disconnected the fuel sending unit. And sprayed the jbolts down with kroil oil I'm gonna start pulling the tank tomorrow. I managed to also fix my lawnmower with one of the old drum brake springs. I broke the return spring last week when I was mowing and my blades wouldn't turn off as I was taking apart the drums a light turned on hey this should work to fix my mower! Haha and it did work very nicely.
The bad news I found more rust underneath it appears to be on the hump in the rear floors the back of the car is full of parts and junk right now I'm gonna clean it out and inspect it from the inside I guess eventually I will cut it out and patch it up! I need a passenger side front floor pan too! I will probably eventually replace them all the right way with the correct replacement floor pans but for now it's just cut out the rust to keep it from spreading and patch the hole!
One question. Does that undercoating look original or is that something someone sprayed on after it was bought?
