Hey guys,
I think i might need to rebuild my transmission. I was driving on the highway over the weekend and when i came to a stop my car died on me. Then i started the car and rev the rmp up and put it in Drive and the clutch slip n i heard a loud clunk! Its seem like the whole transmission drop to the ground. I manage to drove home and had to play around with the gears. First of all, how do i know what kind of tran do i have, 904 or 727?? Its in a shop now and they think i might need a new transmission. Its a 1973 dodge dart swinger wit 318 and its auto. Any advice with will help.
Thanks
Bach

..............likely a 904.....904 has 1 corner cut off......the pan on a 727 juts out where the dipstick tube fits in..........kim..........

I just talked to the previous owner, he is pretty sure is a A904 and he had it rebuild back in 2002. It leaking tranny fluid too so i think i might need a new transmission.

It's unlikely the transmission problem and the engine dying had anything to do with each other unless the converter went bad. First do what inertia said.....check the fluid level. If it's still acting up, have a pressure test performed to determine what went bad. If there is burnt fluid or lots of metal in the pan, the transmission will probably have to be overhauled.

I did check and is leaking fluids. I try to drive around the shop and its not going into Drive, i have to put in all the way to 1 but wont go into to Drive. We gonna take the transmission out this week.
Thanks--Kim

I got a new used rebuild transmisson put in. After i drove it around for five to ten minutes, I can hear some grinding noise coming from the transmission when it in park. Any ideas? They gonna take the tranny out this weekend and see why is making that grinding sound.

I bought the tranmission and a convertor from someone and he say they both go together. But it didn't so I used the old convertor. The convertor that came with the transmission have a writting on it 360 and 1974...I think is for a different transmission. Should i get a new convertor? Thanks

using the old converter from an trans that has gone dead is a bad idea. any metal or debre thats left in the converter or lines is going to make its way back to the trans. Sounds like you need to take a step back and evaluate before throwing parts at it. a grinding noise in park or a howling noise?

Griding noise is in park. The noise go back and fort, sounds like something is touching each others. The old tranny was rebuild in 2002. Thanks
