South Jersey area- looking for best place for rebuild/tune for my TQ

    Tired of all the bs

    Suggestions please

Just had it rebuilt from trustworthy source, left the car at the shop. Ride home smelled gas, saw upper back of the bowl was wet, both sides. Guy said floats were high, could be dirt.

4 days later, started, backed out of garage, changed oil, won't start. Checked spark, changed ballast resistor. Nothing. Next day, would start, only run if at 3k rpm, put in gear, dies. Smell gas Guy says maybe dirt, try knocking it lose, if no good bring carb back.

Another guy swears switch to Demon, others stick w TQ. I would stick w the TQ if I can get it right.

Thermoquad when right is better than a demon in my opinion. Some time back demons were having issues with quality control. However, thermoquad parts are becoming scarce. If you dig around you can still get parts on ebay and other carb part places too.

      I love TQs
      Ok well, not love exactly,
      but it's my favorite carb,
not to work on maybe, but
      primary throttle-response is killer, with a small to medium street cam;
but, more than anything, I like the roar of the secondaries.
Too bad I don't live next door.

where in SJ are you? i'd look at it for ya but i haven't had one apart in many years (about 20 years) so not really sure i'd want to experiment on someones carb..lol

th eone in my old LRE used to constantly suck dirt into the needle and seat.. it wouldn't idle when that happened.. would flood itself out..

Joe, I am down the road from you off Rt 30, I bought the 360 from you last year. I do not know what is causing the issue. The guy who rebuilt it said its probably dirt. It seems odd to me that dirt would be an issue that fast the day after the rebuild, when it was not an issue before and the carb was beat. The tank was done a few years ago, how can i keep dirt out? It seems its flooding itself out and the bowl is leaking, from flooding? I am taking the carb off and bringing it back to get checked. My next round of questions will be setting it up properly!

I was looking into sending it to Harms, but decided to stay local. Maybe its just bad luck and it will be fine, but i am now thinking, maybe i should drop the tank and replace the lines and start fresh rather than chance any dirt coming in.

Hmmm. My lil red used to find dirt somewhere. I’d pull the needle and seat, blow it out and put it back together and it fixed it every time.

What kind of filter do ya have on it? Can you put a stone type of filter inline somewhere ?

@physixx is good with them too. He is in Edison. He Car is in the 10’s with a thermoquad. Maybe he would be willing to look at it.

I know nothing about carbs. i would love to learn how to clean the needles etc. I suppose I could find a place for a stone filter. I have an old school clear in-line filter just before the carb.

Don't give up. When you get it right it will be rewarding!!:) Give Physixx a shout out! If he's doing 10's with a thermoquad he must be doing something right.

                Rebuilding them is easy.
General set up isn’t to difficult ether.
The fine tuning is just trial and error when you start getting away from stock to modified. Just like any other carb.

There is a book about how to rebuild the Carter line of carbs. An excellent investment.

find out what your builder says.. if he says its dirt i'll bring one of my extra carbs over and we can learn/relearn how to clean the needle and seat in the crappy one before pulling yours apart..

i know its not too hard.. just have to refresh myself.

Your carb guy needs help if you have a fresh filter how can it be dirt, and why would the floats be too high. Unless u have too much fuel pressure

That's my thinking. The carb wasn't pulling so much dirt that it wont start prior to being rebuilt and it is a fairly new filter and why would I suddenly have a surge in fuel pressure

Carb was checked out and it was dirty.

The tank was done 10yrs or so

Should i drop the tank or add another filter or is there a filter i should be using?
