Hey everybody,
I've been searching all over this forum and a couple others as well and cannot find a straightforward answer on which P/S pump and bracket I need to get, if I have to replace the stock
ones to make it work.
I went with the V belts for nostalgic reasons, but the Engine is between 1993 and 2001 5.9 magnum with ported and polished EQ heads. As I mentioned I do have the original
TRW P/S pump that didn't leak and brackets, but it won't mount up to the new timing chain cover, water pump and front of heads. I keep seeing people mentioning they used the
bracket off of a Dodge Van but fail to say, WHAT YEAR DODGE VAN!!!! I assume the same year as the engine but you know what assuming gets you besides parts you just bought that don't work.
I'm upgrading my front suspension to QA1 whole front end with the coil overs and want to go back to power steering, this manual crap sucks. I need to find whatever it takes to make this P/S a reality
even if I have to buy a whole new pump and bracket to do so, I know this is the right place with the right all-knowing wizards to ask.

Thanks in advance and Happy moparing

New power steering pump for 70 up and pullies to match will solve your problem. And alternator brackets, new hoses, radiator with swapped in/out , and that should be it.
Or... run your water pump, add a bolt on timing tab, and put a timing tape on the balancer. You will have to elongate one crank pully bolt hole for the balancer bolt pattern.
I have ps pumps, bolt on tabs, alt brackets, for whichever way you end up converting.
Don't forget your new L motor mount plate, big port exhaust manifolds, or headers.
FOR SALE - 1974 and up small block saginaw power steering pump.

Here's the setup you need.

1970 Dart .

1970 340 timing chain cover, saginaw power steeering pump and brackets.

Here's where I got my brackets.

Your original setup won't work, as you have found out. It is for a '69 and earlier cast iron water pump with driver's side inlet, and will not fit the '70 and later aluminum water pump with passenger side inlet that you swapped to.
The simple answer is to use the '70 and later power steering pump and bracket (preferably with the matching pulleys) which utilizes the more readily available Saginaw pump. There are several variations of this bracket (high mount, low mount, etc.) but all should fit and function just fine.

You are confusing this for a recommendation for use with a Magnum serpentine drive to gain clearance to the battery tray. This bracket does NOT work with an LA style V-belt drive. Even if you swapped on a pump with a V-belt pulley and got it to line up, it has no means of adjusting belt tension.

Since you swapped to LA front drive components, you need to stick with an LA pump & brackets.

Power steering pump with a metal cap won’t work on this setup up

Thank you Thank you thank you

As far as I'm aware, a saginaw pump is the only one that can use a factory mounting system with a Magnum engine converted to 1970 LA front timing chain and aluminum water pump.

What I'm running on both my Dart and Duster (mag engines with LA covers and aluminum pump); PLEASE NOTE.

If you are running a slant six k-frame with Schumacher mounts and a V8 a SAGINAW PUMP WILL NOT FIT. The pump line strikes k-member rib and you have almost no adjustment. You could cut and ground down the rib for clearance which I elected not to do because I'm changing k-frames in future.

I was able to cobble brackets together for a TRW pump which sits up higher and has the pressure line up top. Note; from the factory there are no brackets for the TRW pump and aluminum water pump small block hence the cobbling together part.

Once I install the spool-mount k-frame I'll be able to run the Saginaw pump setup.

A relatively easy situation to work around.
Use the P.S. pump, brackets and hoses from a '75 ish and later passenger car that has an air pump- they moved the P.S. upward and out (still clears the battery tray) to make room for the air pump and it's brackets. Solves any issues with the adapter motor mount clearance.

Notice I said passenger car; for some reason on trucks they put the air pump on top and tucked the P.S. pump way down under it. A real PITA to get at sometimes...

The high mount brackets also work well with early A body swaps, where the low mount brackets and pump/hoses can actually hit the K frame and/or strut rod ends and nuts.

Stuff like that hard to find these days and fairly rare issue.
