Just after 8 a.m. on Dec. 7, 1941, the battleship USS Arizona, at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, was attacked by Japanese bombers multiple times.

Yeah they killed a lot of people and did a lot of damage that day. Daddy served aboard a Cannon Class DE during WWII and never forgave "those damn japs".

Oh yeah, but I think this is the first year that none were able to make it.

By the way, my Dad - a WWII Navy veteran who joined a few months after Pearl Harbor - would be 104 this month if he were still alive.

My wife and I were visiting the USS Arizona Memorial on Memorial Day in 2003. They only can take so many visitors over to the memorial at a time and the place was packed. We were about the 3rd group in line. When we boarded our launch to go over, we were told it would be a while because a survivor of the USS Arizona had passed away and had requested that his ashes be interred inside the Arizona with his shipmates who were killed and went down with the ship. US Navy Seal divers and National Park Service divers ceremoniously granted his wish, and we were more than happy to wait for the private ceremony to conclude. What was so impressive about the whole thing was, the USS Carl Vinson had docked at Pearl the day before. It was docked beside where the launches depart to the memorial, about 100 yards to the left. While the divers were placing his ashes, the ENTIRE crew of the USS Carl Vinson stood on deck in dress whites to honor the old sailor being laid to rest. When Taps was played, you could hear the rumble as 1500 or so Sailors snapped to attention. I know it was my imagination in the moment, but I swear I felt a breeze when we heard the order "ATTENTION!" and that many right arms snapped to salute. I'll never forget it as long as I live.

My uncle was aboard the West Virginia - behind and outboard of the Arizona - the morning of the attack.
He survived but had to swim underneath burning fuel oil to get away from the ship. He couldn't ever go in water above his knees without having flashbacks of that day.

One of my customers was in the arden forest during the battle of the bulge
What a great guy ...he was going to be 99 about 6 years ago we were going have a beer for his birthday...but never seen him again
