    Sounds pretty good.

I wonder if that means I can register my swinger using the original plates that I currently have on the car, long since out of the system.

I wonder if you went through the DMV and requested the same numbers on a new "personalized" plate, and they were available, you could just pop the old ones on with the new stickers?

I'm hoping the new ones will be noticeably different than the original Plates so the guys with their cherished originals can still have that esteem. I have enough "Period Correct" guys telling me what's "wrong" with my daily driver but would love some black plates on a black car.

So what I have been able to find out so far is that they will look like the originals, but reflective. More than likely the "California" will be printed instead of stamped.
ALso a rumor that they will allow you to purchase any colored plate for any vehicle. So basically if I pay the fee, I can have black and yellow plates on my 2004 KIA.

Crackedback, as far as I can find out, THE YOM program won't be changing...So were still screwed.

If you have paperwork that shows those original plates on the car you can use them, otherwise you are stuck the YOM program which requires an annual fee. I've got a set for my 67, but I won't pay their fee. My GTS still has the plates that were put on it when it entered California in 1969 or 1970 (late black plates)

I have the title that shows the plate number. 3 places said no go as it wasn't a 69 and earlier and the plates are out of the system from no reg since late 90's.

If you know how to keep a Blue/Yellow plate on a 70, I'm all ears!

crackedback, IF you have paperwork with the original plates AND the car does not have a salvage title you can re-register it with those plates. This law dates to well before the YOM program. Talk to a manager.

I'll try that. Would you happen to know the VC section?

Or do I need to search. Thanks

I don't have the information. I was told this back in the 90s when I was working on the registration for my old 67 Dart hardtop. At that time I couldn't find any of the old paperwork, but that car is long gone and I Still have the original black plates.

I wonder what happens with the fees if the car I bought had one 1 of 2 white and blue plates. The law here says that I have to have two plates on the car. I have a set of old cleared black and yellows for my '67 so I will try to do the YOM program. It's a 45 dollar fee at first but I don't know if there's an annual fee for the original black and yellows.

By the way, if anyone is looking for the YOM paperwork, just google "DMV 352" and it comes up. It looks like there's no annual fee unless you want to retain the plates without a vehicle to use them on.

I'll look into it then. I have two pairs of out of the system plates, both originally from 67's and we have two 67's that could use them...

Currently a $10 annual fee. That's what personalized plates were when I got mine back in 1981. They're something like $50 now. I don't trust this state to not raise the fee in the future.

In addition to the regular renewal fee for the vehicle for which the plates are authorized, the applicant for a renewal of the plates shall be charged an additional fee of ten dollars ($10). If payment of a regular vehicle renewal fee is not required by this code, the holder of license plates with a date corresponding to the model-year may retain the plates upon payment of an annual fee of twenty dollars($20) that shall be due at the expiration of the registration year of the vehicle to which the plates were last assigned under this section.

Orders update Sept,27,2013: 6697. 803 more orders and they go into production. I saw a black F Body Cuda at the Coronado Speed Festival that had them. Not sure how he got them though.

How did the new ones look? Like original or reflective? Was it a personal plate, six digit or seven?

Does that order limit cover both the black and blue plates or just one color?

When all three (yellow, black, blue) reach 7500 orders combined. Here is a list of the order numbers so far. The plate I saw looked like an original black plate except for the California is not raised. If I can get photobucket to work i'll throw up a pic of what I think was one on that Cuda.

I think the new plates are going to be reflective, that is my concern wondering how they will look. I would bet the plate you seen was a personal plate someone ordered then just painted. Illegal but it has been done.

What happens if they reissue plates that are still in existence? I've got a couple of sets that I might use...that are likely out of the system...
