Had a new clutch installed, was very cautious the first 500k to be sure I didn't glaze it. Driving easy one day and with the clutch pressed it grinded out of 3rd, would not go back in gear and my clutch pedal got super stiff. Any ideas what would cause the pressure plate to literally fall apart with only 700k on it, and the clutch plate being perfectly fine?

you have your parts identified wrong what you show is the clutch disc/plate not the pressure plate which should have been damaged a bit as well -- was the clutch disc/plate installed backwards ??? -- also grinded is not a word.

Dual clutch? That clutch hub failed with some stress on it, the way the metal looks curled up.

That looks like a truck clutch fron a newer CTD with a g56. A stock replacement at that. I would purchase a better clutch next time.

You will not see a RAM, McLeod, etc with such a wimpy hub assembly.

Did you have any clutch smells/noises during the shakedown process? What does the flywheel look like? Hydraulic or Z bar clutch linkage? I would like to see other side of the intact clutch disc and both sides of the pressure plate. and isnt there a plate that goes in between those in a dual setup? I dunno, I havent run one of those.

New member, posted Friday, stopped by yesterday but no further information to add. We don't have a clue what this came out of, what kind of a clutch it is, or how it was used. I think I will move along, nothing more to see here. It's just a big guessing game at this point.

Needs to work on terminology as well.. seeing there are two clutch plates/ discs shown. One good, one for parts. No "pressure plate" in sight.

..oh and for the non-Canucks in the crowd, 700k (kilometers) is 420 miles

looks like the trans is not aligned. Cutch took it like a flex plate takes an unshimmed small snout convertor in a later large snout crankshaft. I cracked all 4 ears off mine before I knew about the T-flite Paddy shim.

Disc rivets worn out on half of disc surface.
I think the disc was bent hanging trans halfway in on install.
It's been flexing till fatigue caused it to fail .

Why is it that not one of these guys ask this question in the manual transmission and clutch forum? Are they all oblivious to the next forum above this one. Or are they just ……? Kim

If I remember correctly, I put it here but I was on my phone so I got the wrong forum. I believe it was in the Welcome Wagon forum to start. All is good now. The OP hasn't been on since Saturday. I hope we didn't scare him off with our boldness.

That is what happens when you do not have enough power "hp" to overcome the traction or enough clutch,ie diameter of the clutch like a 10.4 or 11...
