I dont know how much safer Hydrogen is as compared to gasoline as Hydrogen is highly explosive. If you ever had a car battery explode you'll know what I mean

Hydrogen will never be a viable source for fuel. It takes tons of energy to produce, and you just can't trust the average idiot with the stuff. Hell, you couldn't trust a bunch of highly-trained anal-retentive Germans with it.
