getting right into assembling the 493. went to screw the 1/2" oil pick up in to find the engine builder had forgotten to enlarge the hole. short of disassembling the block to do this what are the alternatives. i'm using the melling hv pump. i have been looking at external pick ups like the milodon systems. the 21001 requires a longer shaft. this is a street strip 493. will be spinning to 7000. thumbnail.jpg thumbnail (1).jpg

Put a stock pickup in it and rev to 6000 instead of 7k.
I doubt there's much reason to push the rpm-limits with a 'fun' engine.

Enlarging the block's pickup thread usually means the hole has to be offset drilled and tapped to prevent breakage at the block.
Unless you have remote pickup like you show in the photo, then it's just an oilpan mod.

go external with a single line and never look back. I did using a different cover and a swinging pick up.
saw a few blocks messed up by someone not skilled tapping that pick-up to 1/2"

Use the 3/8" pickup. I've run a 3/8" on my 850 HP 500" engine spinning it to 7,200 rpm.

years ago i ran a 383 with 3/8 pickup to 7500 for 350 1/4 mile passes with no problems. the 493 is a bit more serious of a build and don't want the engine so don't mind going to a external line.

I used the same pick up but a different plate on a 495, It's newer from Milodon
uses the stock length shaft and moves the filter up higher and it is all one piece.

I cut the hose shorter so it didn't have that tight of turn on the final assembly

The external setup is nice, I’ll agree with the stock 3/8 pickup would be fine tho

Are you running a motor plate? The external pickup looks like it might interfere with stock motor mounts.
