So I am building an 74’ 318 for this 86’ Dodge van in my shop.

I’ve swapped the oil pan from the car to a new replacement truck pan that the van needs. (Mid sump to a rear sump)

I cannot buy new a dipstick tube long enough to match the factory 86’ tube (the factory tube is approx 15” long and the dipstick is 36” long) I found a trans dapt oil tube that is 11” long with a dipstick of 21” long - 15” short for the truck pan.

Do I just cut 4” out of the factory dipstick and remark it and use the 11” tube or do you know where to buy a replacement tube that long? The 11” will work- just not as convenient as the factory tube.

The car dipstick was only like 10” long and broke off while removing that engine from the donor car.

Side note: sorry no photos- top secret stuff right here. LMAO.

I'd cut one. Make sure the correct amount of oil after starting. Then mark it with an engraving tool. Or do 1 quart shy and mark. Then add 1 quart and mark again. JMO

The van stuff is just different. Find a junk van? There's one about 5 miles from me, I just don't have the ambition or need to find out if he would sell it, just to get the engine and trans.
Good luck

You must use a truck dipstick as it runs thru the sleeve welded to the inside of the oil pan . Nobody is making repros of the old style truck dipstick , just get a magnum dipstick and tube.

Why not go to as pick and pull and find one from a truck???
The dipstick is not the issue- it’s the tube. And I don’t know of any pick and pulls anywhere near me let alone one that lets you take engines apart.

Is it the same pan as an LA engine?

Simular but will interchange. Must use magnum tube with magnum dipstick and vice versa. Dorman makes both new , about $30
