block and heads are at the mechine shop to be magnafluxed, should hear something in a few days but was wondering if there is anything that could cause that other than brock head or block? this was the crazzzzzzzist build I have ever ran on to.I heard about this type set up years ago fron an old drag racer friend but never thought I"d be the proud owner of one.lol.340 bored .030 over with stock pistons or smaller, still haven't had the pistons checked.but when you looked in the cylinders it looked like at least a 1/8 gap between piston and wall.a friend here worked on the car befor I bought it and said he would have put the H.P. at around 500.he has a 9 second car so I think he was close.I don't know how it ever ran.

Water goes in the radiator. Oil goes in the oil pan.

Water passes through timing cover, better check it too.

thanks for the timing chain cover option, had not thought about that, intake lokes good but I am going to check with some air pressure to be shur

pistons not as small as they seemed, they measured .009 under bore.did not know that from top ring groove up that pistons are .020 smaller than the lower part of piston.now I know why I could see so much ring.dont think gm,s are made quite the same?

I agree, hoping for the best but not holding my breath.looking at all other options from a 5.7 hemi with 6 speed stick to a long block 340 to a newer rollor 360.not sure the best way to go on a budget and the more I read on this stuff the more confused I get.right now been keeping busy doing all the clean up and prep work like cleaning and painting oil pan, intake,k member,bellhousing,ect.ect.ect.pulled bench seat and put in buckets,of coarse the floor pans had some surface rust,so had to clean that up and pore 15 them before installed seats.took both doors apart and got everything working right.had a lot of firewall leaks (that explans the bad floor board condition) that needed attention.new clutch rod boot and some bolt replacement ,think I've got that fixed.headers had some wear spots on bottom so cleaned up and welded wear pad on,have to check what caused that when going back together.had the car for almost a month and think I've got about 120 hours in already.well ,gives me something to do at 4:00 a.m. Better than the casino

I have had mine for a year and a half, got maybe 12 hrs int body and 35 into driveline.

retirement has its perks, lots of free time,6 saterdays and a sunday.less and less and less money.

I must have missed it , who did u buy the engine from/ And what kind of car are u working on ? INQUIRING MINDS WANT TO KNOW !

Know about the less and less $$$ tho----------

I've forgotten some of the pitfalls but there are some head/ block bolt holes THAT IF YOU BOTTOM A BOLT HARD in the hold it can crack open the bottom and let the coolant loose. Maybe you didn't but what about the last guy?

Don't forget "something simple" like the intake / gasket/ head fit? Are the heads milled? Did the intake fit poorly? Bolt go in "difficult?" Sealer on the coolant/ intake passages? Don't forget the intake can be cracked just like anything else!!

Friend of mine once had a timing cover was cracked in the pump impeller area.

1971 Plymouth scamp,340,4-speed,bought knowing only that engine was bad/broke.son was racing ,missed second gear.high reeve situation.I thought valve thru piston or bad bent valve.when I tore the engine down the cam was trash(5 lobes almost gone).antifreeze in valley and pass side top of head(under valve cover) One bent push rod,but was told by the former owner that he had put in three new push rods after the high reeve thing.pulled oil drain plug,1 gal.water came out, then 1.5 gal of oil, then sludge.at that point I pulled engine, disasembled, could not find anything that looked really bad to me ,other than cam and lifters, took heads and block to macine shop and that's where I am right now, should know something from them in a day or two.

After magnafluxing, or in place of it, I'd have a pressure test done on the block and heads, considering the water-in-crankcase situation.
