What the heck is going on with old car prices lately. Is it Barret Jackson syndrome or what.

I've been looking for several months for what I'd basically call a retirement project car/truck.

But everything I'm seeing for sale lately that is in the 5K to 10K price range is just beat up, rusty junk! I'm not interested in paying 8K for a pile of crap that needs total restoration, body panels, interiors, extensive rust repair, etc.

If something nice does pop up, it's sold in a few hours. My guess is too many flippers who will jump on anything that looks like they could make a buck on.

It's just been very frustrating trying to find something that wont drain my bank account just to acquire it.

I see certain cars priced fairly but i think its cars no one thinks of, 68-9 Galaxie/ Torino with 351 windsor, Ford falcons any year, 4 door anything usually Buicks and olds can be had for 5 grand ish...OR there are the cars someone else started and arent going to finish but those are pricey and you may end up with a rolling shell and a bunch of parts, youll have to know what goes where and whats missing...any "big boat car" from the late 60s..,noone wants em the 455 Pontiac Catalina for example or a cadillac, olds Delta 88-98...I see them around in good shape 4 door sometimes two door but two door brings in a bit more money. But you are correct even Fox body mustangs are through the roof...
here's one like I'm talking about on CL in my area:

        1969 Pontiac Bonneville - cars & trucks - by owner - vehicle...

1968 cadillac Sedan deville convertible - cars & trucks - by owner -...

not something people want but under 5 grand and looks fairly complete and decent. I suspect some guys are shipping US cars overseas too one day theyll all be gone...

Lots more people working from home. Makes it easier to drop their leased commuter and start on that "dream project" with the delusion of actually driving it regularly afterward..

Blame all the roadkill type content out there these days, and wrenching shows that make it look easy to build a reliable hot rod, plus a dose of stimmy making higher prices more palatable to the masses.

Yeah I mean I'd like a 66-68 Mustang but I want to drive it away not haul it home in pieces for 10-12 grand...I wouldn't care if its a 6 cylinder I just want it to run and drive for the money. Try and find an A body Mopar, the last one I looked at in my area summer of 2019 was a 74 Duster for 5 grand, the thing started and ran, but the interior was gone, no carpet, door panels were shot, and the seats were duct taped all over. The Killer was the left front frame rail rot. I offered the kid 3800 I said," if I pay 5 grand and can't get the frame rail fixed, I'll have a hard time selling this thing and getting out of it..." The kid was 24 maybe he didn't bite I assume he sold it, but it was too much work for that money the interior and that frame work...no.

I paid $4k for the '65 Plymouth last year, probably could ask for $10k now.

I'm always looking, and I definitely agree prices are UP. I've seen mid range cars that a year ago could be had for 12/15 are now 20 plus. I sold a nice '70 Nova for 16,700 about two years ago and could get 20k plus for it today from what I see out there. It's not just a high asking price, they are selling.

The entire used car market is screwed up currently. I'm trying to find a reasonable first car/truck for my son and if it don't have 250k miles on it, they are asking double or tripple what they were going for a year ago.

How about a Dodge truck? It's been listed for awhile so maybe he'll deal... Or not, could be why it's still listed...

The days of the penny saver,autotrader,etc...are gone. There are deals.... but they they are like the lottery where you just come across them unintentionally. Search for them and you'll be disappointed.

Been looking for a while for a decent '67 - '72 Ford F100, 2 wheel drive. I would even consider a Chevy C10 of the same vintage ( I know, forgive me?). But I'm open to other stuff, probably non mopar just for something different. Two days ago I saw a '70 or '71 Ford Torino pop up, nice car, very original, very rust free, 302 auto, for $5500, it was sold in like 2 hours. I'm trying to think outside the box, maybe cars that aren't so popular etc. Heres a couple pics of the torino.
