Mhhh, I have no permission to read it, but that's ok, it seems to be one run on sentence.
And I'm not sure if a model that sold almost a quarter million cars, in the first year alone, could be considered rare ?

        Wasn't the 198 available in '70?

The rarest ‘70 340 Duster (IMHO) was the one I special ordered. I don’t recall the color code, but it was silver. I believe it may have been A1. That seems to resonate. The color was available on B Body models, but all sales literature indicated it wasn’t available on A Bodies. I went to numerous dealers in the Phila area and they were quick to quote me a price, but said the factory wouldn’t special order the paint code and referred to the sales literature. Finally, I went to a fairly new dealership and gave the salesman my option list and the last item listed was the color code. The salesman tapped his finger on my option list next to the color code and asked if I could give him a couple days to contact the factory. I said, “sure”! Two days later he called me and asked me to stop by the dealership. I stopped by, that day, after work. The factory said they would paint the car my requested color code for an additional $125. The dealership gave me a lower price than any of the other dealers including the $125 paint option. The car was ordered and when it came in I was the proud owner of a Silver ‘70 340 Duster. Torqueflite on the column with bucket seats, 3:91 posi plus other optional goodies.

I have some clarifications to your statements above.

The 360 was not available until 1974 in an A and E-body after Chrysler stopped offering the 340 at the end of the 1973 model year. The Dodge Dar

The Dodge Dart Swinger was never available with a 273 or 383 and as far as I know neither was the 360.

              To Classic Car Guy ----

So did the paperwork and the fender tag on the 1970 Duster 340 show the silver A1 paint code?
Or was the fender tag coded 999 for paint code?

Also concerning 3.91 "posi" - I'm sure that was a slip of the tongue, in that you meant to write Sure Grip in place of posi ?

BTW 1970 Duster 340s with the 727 automatic tranny that were optioned for the performance axle package option were built and delivered with the 3.55 axle ratio. The 3.91 ratio was installed in and reserved for manual transmission equipped 1970 Duster 340s with the optional performance axle package. (See links below for details).

In 1971, Chrysler changed the performance axle ratio option for Duster 340s to include the 3.91 ratio availability for 727 automatic tranny 340 Dusters. Here is but one Chrysler Corp. advertisement confirming the use of 3.91 Sure Grip in 1970 Duster 340s in manual tranny cars only:

Here are the links to the factory sales materials which confirms the limited use of the 3.91 Sure Grip performance axle package option in 1970 Duster 340s = limited to manual tranny 340 Dusters in 1970.

The largest Chrysler Plymouth Dodge high performance dealer in the DMV - DC, Maryland and VA - was Bob Banning who campaigned a number of Bounty Hunter cars with full Chrysler factory support. Their competition cars are well known in the Mid Atlantic. Tom Sneden was the driver, Dave Reitz was the main mechanic.

This dealer had lots of pull with the factory and Chrysler Corp. in that era, and had a huge stock inventory of high performance Mopars for sale and delivery, as well as special factory orders availability.
They sold more factory HEMIs, 440+6, A12, GTX, RRs, and yes 340 equipped cars than any other dealers in the eastern sector of the USA. So buyers could get whatever they wanted, as long as the factory agreed to build it (like in your case).

My brother was a car salesman at Bob Banning from 1969 through 1972.

I too ordered a special order 1970 Duster 340 in early 1970. It was speced for B7 Jamaica Blue Metallic exterior, B7/B5 interior featuring bench seat with center arm rest, Performance Axle package,
Stripes delete, vinyl body side moldings, Light Package, Heavy duty electrical and cooling systems with heavy duty battery and altenator included, AM radio, HD 727 (on the column), full tinted glass, raised white letter E70-14 tires. Car was built and delivered in June 1970. $2,840 out the door price including taxes, tags and delivery charges.

I wish I still had the car ! Sold it in 1973 for $1400 to fund my college education ! Miss it still!

The 318 & 340's were not available until 1968. That is when they replaced the 273. In 1967 the 383 was available in the A-body and in 68 the massive 426 was as well. In 69 they added the 440 to the list.

I sold my ‘70 Silver Duster to my younger brother, who later sold it to a local police officer.
Then I believe it was in the 90’s my younger brother provided the Duster VIN to his high school friend who owns an auto tag service. (Title & auto registration service) His friend ran the VIN which showed the Duster was last registered to someone two towns away. My brother went to the address and knocked on the door. A man came to the door and my brother stated “I believe you may own a car I once owned.” The man asked what kind of car? My brother told him it was a ‘70 Plymouth Duster. The owner explained the car had rusted badly, so he parted it and sent what remained to the scrap yard about 6 weeks ago!
He also explained to my brother that the police officer had repainted the car OD green. I guess the police officer didn’t care for my special order paint selection. (Lol)
My brother secured the last owner’s phone number who I then contacted. He told me he had acquired so many speeding tickets that he lost his driver license. Without a drivers license his parents made him go to college since he couldn’t legally drive for work.
He also boasted that there wasn’t anyone in the area that ever beat him in the quarter (street racing). He said with the 3.91 gears they killed him on the top end, but not in the 1/4 mile. My brother and I could both attest to his experience. In hind sight, I wish I had gone to the scrap yard and confirmed it had been crushed.
I thought you might enjoy hearing the sad demise of my special order silver Duster.

Couple of corrections here...273 carried on 'til '69 in the A-body - it got juice lifters and a cast crank for '68 and '69...383 was a mid-year introduction in '67 in the Dart (GTS) and earlier in the Barracuda only, not Valiant....426 HEMI was available in '68 only as a track-only option-not street legal...and, finally, the 440 was available in '69 Darts and B'Cuda's for that year only.
