I'm fixing to break that new cam Grind on my car and I got a new radiator and I'm thinking of going without the Shroud also and just fixing the 2 electric fans just to the new radiator it's self.

    Why not use a thermostat?

      Because race car....

We dont run T stats on the drag cars. That way we can cool them off easy with just the fan running. Cycle the water pump or bump the starter over, move water and continue cooling.

This way I never have to worry about a bad T stat. Water is moving. I can keep water in the radiator, run the fan and then bump the engine with ignition off or just turn on the water pump and move hot water out of the block into the radiator and start cooling water again.

A thermostat ONLY heats the water and it dam sure can fail.
I dont care how long it takes to warm up the water, I only care about keeping the water at the temp I want it at.

        190-210 degrees.

IMHO... easy test. leave radiator the way it is. swap restriction plate for 180 190 thermostat and test. restriction plate may be flowing way too fast to transfer heat at speed.

Lower radiator hose could be collapsing. Had a similar problem.

        Spring in lower radiator hose.

And with the plate in the T stat location I can check water flow at any RPM.

I know a prof. mech. that cured an overheating problem on a blown chevette by using a plate w/ a 1" hole in it. I experimented w/ hole size on a hot 406sbc, and wound up w/ a 5/8" hole in it.--jfyai

Cope , after reading through all the replies and ideas and seeing your shroud set up, I have come to the conclusion ( my own Opinion) . That some of us have no Idea what we are doing and some know every thing about everything!. In my past experience I have never had any problems with my car running to cool (except in the winter and getting not enough heat from the heater). I like to run all my hot rod , race engines and even my damn /6 van cool as possible. The engine will run up to the temp it likes, provided the cooling system is adequate. I have had to just throw out the thermostat on one to keep it from over heating, that some say you can't do that. I have never F ed up an engine by running to cool, Too hot your sitting on side of the road like old faithful at best. Now after seeing your shroud setup If every thing else is in good shape looks to be one sided. But I'm with Steve on this one , The first (cheapest) thing I would try is a lower T stat. Before tearing apart your shroud. Besides cooler engine= cooler oil. But with all that said I'm probably wrong again. Damn it.

Pulled the rad and removed the shroud. Now it's fine on the freeway but it can no longer idle indefinitely.
That just tells me I need a better shroud design or better fans (fan).

Also I no longer have any breaklights, not related I know but annoying just the same...

          Thanks for the help.
