Smallest sort of hex shaped bottle kit from Advance Auto worked in my 67 w/22 inch radiator.
      About 25 dollars.

I just hate the look of those generic bottles, so I made one out of a shotgun shell thermos.
It is a return system with the hose plumbed in from the bottom into the inner tank and an overflow drilled between the layers so if it ever vents it comes out the bottom.
It has just enough volume to vent and recover from the 26" radiator with a little room to spare so no air gets into the cooling system.

I installed a 2" x 10" overflow tank (summit was cheap and steel) between the horns and the radiator. I had to fab brackets but fit really nice and look somewhat factory

How about a nice spun aluminum one with a tig welded bracket?

Just a thought here.- if you are handy in the shop , how about converting a used torch/lantern propane bottle. I have not done it but seems like it would work.

The little Burnz-a-matic bottles work great. Used them to make an overflow bottle for a buddy and to make a catch can for the crank case vent on the race car. very light weight.

So what do they do?, Pick it up to find its empty like the milk jug or beer can ?
A fixed reservoir that I couldn't see through would need a dipstick.
I can't imagine anyone regretting a proper translucent plastic reservoir ( unless they're building a rat rod ).

Why do you even need one? My radiator fluid stays at the same level all the time.

So your proper fill level is a inch or so below full radiator. Is that air causing rust? Recovery tank prevents that embarrassing belch from a overfilled radiator and keeps the radiator completely filled.
At a glance I know I haven't lost any coolant, there's no oil or rust in it. I don't know how long its been since I removed the radiator cap.

But when its hot shouldnt the coolant expand and fill up the extra inch?

Yes fluid expands when hot. Here's my story....
I paid too much for a completely restored radiator for my 67. At install I filled it to the brim. At the cruise-in and switch off it dumped about 2 cups of coolant. Did I say embarrassing? Explained to wife that there wasn't a problem, just a mistake, and assured her that this wont ever happen again.

Same here, 1” below fill seems to be the sweet spot.

I have used this tank that is on a John Deere X495 lawn tractor. It is narrow and fits by radiator.
