Hey FABO, I'm in need of some help with a transmission issue. Since I only know just enough about trannys to create trouble for myself, I thought I'd bring it to the experts.
I'm working on a 727 TF, with 2 issues.
1) The starter will only engage when the shift lever is pulled down about 1/2 way between P and R.
2) Car rolls when shift lever is in P.

First off, I'm wondering if these issues are related to the same root problem or not? Secondly, I cant seem to figure out how to adjust the rod connected to the shift mechanism on the tranny housing so that the park rod pushes the pawl.
I dropped the pan and the valve body looking for any obvious sign, but didn't find one. I put my finger in the hole that the park rod goes into and I can manually move the pawl over and stop driveshaft from spinning. But I can't get the park rod to do the same thing as my finger did.
All clips looked to be in place on the park rod, so I believe it is moving with the shift arm.
Is there anything simple I'm missing? I'd love to avoid a shop visit, and save some money.

Thanks for any advice you might have.

Simply sounds more like a shifter linkage adjustment than the park shaft.....

I had my wife move the shift lever through the gears while I adjusted the rod through the shift mechanism to different lengths. Could never get it to lock and stop the drive shaft from turning.

Mine was an AZZ to adjust.....but simular issue was was just in the linkage...

Shift linkage adjustment is needed. Proper way to do: Have a helper hold shifter in 1st gear, then loosen the pinch bolt on the linkage that is attached to shift lever on trans. Manually push the trans shift lever to the 1st gear position. Retighten pinch bolt.

Ok, great. I'll give that try this morning. Thanks for the tip.

Finally got a chance to get out and have another look at the linkage tonight. After some adjustments to the shift rod at the rooster comb, everything is functioning as should be. Also, car starts up in the Park position. Thanks to all for your replies and advice.
