Has anybody used pearl paint? I`m thinking of changing the color on my convertible and thought of a pearl white. If you have an example please post a picture of it. Anybody have experience with pearls? What light colors look the best?

Keep in mind that a pearl you most likely will chose if you decide on it will be a tri-coat and cost $$.
Being a painter, I would advise you check w/your local paint store and look through the chip books. They all have different a price range, a gallon can start at $800.00 alone or more plus hardner, reducer. PPG, Dupont, Martin Senour and RM are good quality brands I use.
I would stick basic white and tweak it w/a pearl in the clear coat vs. a tri-coat job. I don't have photos I can show, but I've shot a lot of pearl tri-coat amongst others.
Thats my two cents....

White pearl is fairly easy to paint. Cadillac does have one of the nicer white pearls. You could use mopar white and add any pearl coat. Think about using a different color pearl in the mid coat(blue, red, purple) to possibly match the interior or just to be different.. I would suggest doing a spray out of the color to determine the number of coats to get the color you want. If you decide to change to a colored pearl, have the paint shop use an OEM formula and just change the pearl. I work in a PPG paint store and have done this a number of times. This takes the guess work out and gives you a formula if touch up is needed. $800/gallon seems VERY high to me!!!! That should get you a gallon of the base and pearl plus reducer...If you use one of the mid-tier paints, Shopline/Omni or Nason, $800 should cover all the paint and clear...

Wildcat is that a pearl paint job? Do you have some close-ups? I have a Barracuda convertible and the top and interior is complete and in black. The car is about ready for paint and I`m not feeling the original red. I was thinking of a lighter color, maybe a silver, champagne, or pearl white. It means a lot more work to change color though......, I just don`t know which way to go with it. If I found a color that really knocked my socks off then I`d take the color change leap without any reservations. Alaskan Dart (Mark) thanks for the info, I wouldn`t mind spending the extra bucks on good pearl paint if I can find the right paint.

Sorry, I meant $800.00 for both paints, $400.00 for each gallon. I can run a check on price as well tomorrow, but I would rather spend more $$ on the cars performance than pearl paint. Thats just me though. ha-ha...
Lexus has a nice pearl as well. Lambo' too.......

I made my color with a red base and house of kolor dry pearl. I'll hopefully be shooting it some day if you want to come down to P-town and check it out. I have a few leftover pearls too if you wanted to check them out.

There is a nice 67 Cougar that comes to the local cruie-ins. One of those with the window tray and fake food placed on the drivers door.
I asked about his pearl white paint and he said its a generic mix. Looks nice but... in my eye it really looks out of place when parked among others of the same era. I'm sure it looks better when it stands alone in his driveway.
The Toyota pearl white is my favorite

Guess I got my paint from the wrong place (finishmasters) I should have been able to paint 2 cars for what I paid for material.............LOL

I would suggest going to the new car dealerships and looking at the new cars or to a car show since so many Pearls are showing up.

Maybe a custom painter in the area might have some samples of work to check out or a House of Color paint dealer, HOC has some killer pearls

In my opinion, the Cadillac pearl has a yellow/gold(dirtylook) cast to it.Take a look at the Lincoln (ford) white pearl. It's a LOT BRIGHTER WHITE , and cleaner looking . It's a really bright white ! I painted my T-top Daytona with it, gets a lot of compliments. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder tho.
Also, find a PPG paint dealer, and opt for the OMNI paint. It's alot less price wise, and a good quality for the price. I use it all the time with no problems. The pearl oem paint (Lincoln/Ford) that I'm talking about is NOT expensive at all !!

this was my bike 3 weeks after the wreck.. sad. paint still shines though.. she was waxed up that day. i actually took the biggest part of the hit. bikes still totaled though

I priced out a gallon of each color, white and the pearl coat in Omni/Shopline, reducer and 2 gallons of clear w/hardener $525 + tax.
If you upgrade to DBC base and reducers with the same clear $875 +tax
This is our everyday price.

That`s not too bad, thanks for the info. Have you seen pearl over silver? I found a silver Honda color (circa 2000) called "Heather Mist" and thought a pearl over it would be beautiful.

Wildcat I can see some of the pearl in the latest photos you posted. I `ll send you my email and you can send me some more photos.

I ran a price on paint, hardner and reducer today at work. Total came to $728.12. Thats also my cost of materials. PPG and Dupont are about the same FYI.
Looks nice when done, complete, door jambs, under side of deck lid, hood and misc. pieces/touch up.

I have some photos of cars I've painted like so, but file is to large. Hope this bit of info. helps.

It`s always good to know how deep the water is before you jump in. :-D

If I recall the "heather mist" has a rose/pink cast to it...That might limit your pearl options???? You might want to pick a silver, mopar has a few, and try a few different color pearls over it???? The silver like the white will give you a nice starting point. I've done black with violet pearl over. Very subtle until you catch a body line or side angle...

Yeah I think it does. I guess you really want a pure color as a base to start with.

Another "CHEAP" way to get a pearl is to put some pearl into the first couple of coats of clear. You can buy the pearls on ebay for less than $20. You add some to the first couple of coats of clear and then top coat with a couple of coats of regular clear. That way when you wet sand and buff you do not affect the pearl. I did this on my Ram Charger and it came out kind of cool. You can really see the pearl when the sun hits the body lines.
