Two years ago I was looking at trucks. Went to the dodge dealer, and they had about 30 trucks. EVERY one of them was a 4 door quad cab , every one had a hemi, and every one was loaded and expensive. I just wanted a truck.

To find a plain truck find a dealership that caters to commercial sales. Dodge by me doesn't have a large commercial presence, but I assume they must have some commercial dealers. I do see contractor trucks, but the overwhelming majority are pimp trucks on 20's. The commercially orientated dealers will order a large number of stripper trucks on their floor plan. Generally white, am/fm, steel 17" wheels, rubber floors, mix of regular and crew cab long beds. They usually have all the important options...tow package, plow prep, roof lights, LSD/lockers, 4.10's, fluid coolers, ect. End of model year is always best for deals. Even if you can't find a commercially orientated dealer, any Dodge dealer should be able to find exactly what you want and transfer it off another lot. GMC has done it for me several times. They search the national inventory and transfer it in. Sometimes they have to trade a vehicle or two to help balance out their stock.

It's hard to find a NEWER one with 2 doors and an eight foot bed. That's why I love Gladys. She even handles GOOD for an older F250. The Camper Special package put BIG front and rear sway bars on her and I just replaced all the bushings a little while back with Moog urethane bushings. She might be a Ford, but she's a damn good truck.

Looked for a while to find this one, what really sucks, is no manual trans trans unless you buy a diesel.
I did not want a diesel, so I settled for one with an auto.

i never had a need for a pick up truck...all my buddies have them
(actually it was that attitude that got my wife to tell me to buy a trailer, years ago now)

about all i needed a pickup for was hauling dirtbikes, and since i bought the trailer, i can do that with the charger

the closest thing to a "truck" i own is an 87 bronco, bought it earlier this year to push snow

It's big enough to haul the entire family around (at least, this winter it still is) and even though it's a ford, it's a 2 door truck, so it still looks pretty cool

I have never been without a truck. Long ago I told myself "Self, when Dodge puts that Viper V-10 in a short bed pickup, we'll buy one." Well they did it, I did some research on those beasts. Seems Dodge in their infinite wisdom just took ALL the Viper engine transmission components and threw them in the truck without taking into account the ton of extra empty weight the transmission had to move. Replacing the clutch every 30K miles was not an option in my opinion, and that's what all the research indicated. Besides, the 5.7 Express will fry the drive tires with little effort .

My 70 D200 Camper Special with a 8ft bed and 383 seems to haul anything.

I'm building the truck I want.
2 door, club cab, 8ft. bed, 4x4, automatic transmission.
              Extremely reliable.
Over the next year I'll probably have 6-7k into it, but by that time the interior will be sound deadened and plush. Also the drive train will have been completely gone through. It'll get rims and tires and a small lift if needed after the new springs.

Maybe the newer trucks have salved this but I'm kinda tall and a regular cab just doesn't offer a comfortable seating position "for me personally". Also of course extra inside cargo is very handy.

I'm a bigger guy so I also like a bigger cab. I have a '95 Ram 2500 (4 tires) with a 5.9 Diesel 12valve. I bought the girl a couple years ago with 90k, rust free body, A/T and for the most part a great interior. The frt end was ragged out so that's been rebuilt. Good truck - gives me 22 mpg on the hwy, 18 around town. Body and paint are great too. I am happy with the girl, she'll pull anything!

After driving a 4 door for 15 yrs., I went the other way, 2 door/shortbed/ 305 horse v 6/ towing package. Not too sure about the towing as I haven`t towed yet. A short wheel base truck will outrun the car trailer when backing, makes it easier. Guess were all headed to the dummy ford thing about the truck backing itself ! It`s getting bad , when a man can`t back up his own truck !!

FWIW.....If you are looking at new Dodge trucks and want what is probably the best discount in the nation, look at Dennis Dillon in Caldwell ID. They keep around 500 trucks on the lot at all times, and are the #3 RAM dealer in the USA.

We need Mega cabs in our work and have 2, plus a Ford crew cab; all diesels. We put 3 people and $10-50k worth of electronics in the cab (to keep it dry and safe) and go 500 miles to install it. A long bed would indeed be nice, but the wheel base would get even longer.... and I remember well how much 'acreage' it took to turn my '84 Chevy crew cab with 8' bed by 180 degrees LOL

Yes true, but back in the 80's if you were pulling a BIG trailer, YOU had to have a crew cab, 454 1 ton cowboy Cadillac!!!! yep it took an acre to turn it around!!! still does!! Ha

I was very lucky to find my 92 1st Gen D250. Found it in NW PA, and believe it or not, very little rust. Someone had installed, whats called a rust evader under the hood. It has 8 small pads that are located on the metal of the truck, here and there. Its wired to the battery. I don't know much about em , but it has done its job. Im sure its an electrical reaction, similar to electrolysis on mare craft. Mine is intercooled turbo Cummins, Extra cab, with an 8 ft 2in bed. Thats right, slightly longer than 8ft. The truck sat so low and had the ugly side mouldings and paint. So I pulled off the mouldings and raised the truck (It is 2wd). Then I paid a buddy to repair the small rust on the cab corners and paint it 2004 Ram color PDR. I Love it, I drive it every day. I modified the Inj Pump just a little. Wow, What a difference. Pics before and after.

I bought an '87 D250 318/auto long bed 2wd standard cab a couple years ago, I was making a lot of 180-mile round trips hauling furniture and stuff at the time so it was pretty good for that. These days I hardly ever use it though, so I may get rid of it (it's a beater, nothing nice).

I had a few good Ford trucks over the years.

1972 F-250 390 cid, aluminum intake, 4 bbl, headers and 4.10 rear gears. It was my work truck back when I owned a Custom Auto Upholstery business in the early 80s.

Thanks Bob. I haven' looked at the GM products. A couple guys at work have GMs and are happy with them, but I just can't get past the looks of them. Lol
