I just purchased a 1968 Dart 270, and I am new to the forum.

I tried searching the site for info, but I was unable to find it, so I'm posting this thread. My apologies if I'm asking questions that have been previously answered

My car is equipped with 13" wheels and large wheel covers.

I understand that 14" wheels were available on some 1968 Darts.

    My questions:

    1. Is my understanding correct?
    2. What size 14" plain steel wheel and tire is correct for the 1968 Dart?
    3. What size new radial tire is closest to the original 14" tire?
    4. Where can I purchase a set of the correct 14" plain steel wheels that will accept the large wheel covers?

    Thanks.

Detroit Steel Wheels appears to offer custom steel wheels, which I'm not interested in. I'm looking for original style plain steel wheels as originally supplied with the Dart.

Basic 14'' wheels for your car would be 14''x4.5 wide, the next factory width would be 14''x5.5 wide and remember that from the factory it will have the 5 lug 4'' bolt circle. Depends on what your looking for.

Your main problem will be finding "small" bolt pattern wheels.

Compounding that will be find small bolt wheels with the 10" cap tangs.

That basically limits you to A body, pre-1968 wheels.

Full wheel covers are size specific- 13" wheel covers will not fit 14" wheels. Some similar styles were offered in both sizes, however. Once you hunt down your wheels, you'll need to find some wheel covers too.
An ad in the parts wanted section is your best bet for both.

What tire size fits the 14x4.5 wheels?

Probably any 6'' or narrower tire.

185/75-14 would be a decent size tire that would fit on a 4.5 rim width, and is actually available.

If you can find some factory 14 x 5.5 wheels, you could move up to 195/70-14 (or 205 or 215) and get a better selection.

I plan to source the 14x4.5 wheels, because I want the original look. My car is a 4-door, so the narrow wheels will give the most authentic look.

Coker Tires has tires with the bias-ply retro look, if you want to go that route.

Wouldn't a stock 1973-1976 A-body Base model (drums) come with 14" with 5X4 bolt pattern? I am sure these are probably a dime a dozen as people upgrade to discs and 5X4-1/2" pattern. Is that right?
