Looking for some thought on what this plug is trying to tell me.

rich , maybe need a hotter plug , timing is a little slow -------
 
Stock heads or aluminum? Reason I ask is that I have the stealth440 heads and used their recommended plugs which had the 3/4 long threads and they always looked like the example you provided. Went to a hotter plug which has the 1" long threads and they looked 100% better with no carb or timing changes. Conclusion is the plugs were hidden in threaded shaft instead being exposed at the end of thread shaft.

They’re cast 915 with mild porting and polished chambers. Trying to find a step up in the heat range right now.

In your case, don't get hooked to any one brand of plug. That series of plug (J series in a Champion) with the short reach like that has a very limited selection of plugs. Cross reference charts and tables are almost worthless to try and find a plug.

My best guess without knowing more is you need at a minimum of a Champion 12 heat range to start. Maybe a 15, but you can't get that in a Champion.

So...if you take what you have a do a little tuning first it will be easier to see what you have going on.

The thing is DEAD RICH at idle and cruise, and from what I can see, it looks like you need more initial timing and more total.

Once you start getting a cleaner plug, it will be easier to see heat range.

And again, you may end up with an Autolite or something to find the correct heat range. You may need something in between what NGK offers and someone else may fill that hole. Sometimes when your plus selection is limited you have to buy what makes the engine happy.

Feed the dog what it wants to eat.

Thanks for the input. I’m running an Edelbrock 800cfm AVS2. I just changed metering rods to lean it out. Going to take it out here in a bit and recheck.
 
I believe the J10y and colder were the old track plugs way back. They didn't fair too well on the street as I recall.
 
Ok stupid question: I drove in town and 55 mph on the freeway for a bit, just my normal driving. Put 31 miles on it with the new metering rods. Is that enough miles to get a decent read?
Definitely leaner.....

I can see the metal peppering on the center wire. You are pretty close. Maybe pull 2 degrees of total out of it because the heat mark on the ground strap is right at the shell.

Also, you need to make a WOT pull and see where the fuel ring is.

They look pretty good.
 
Sweet, thats great info Thanks! The first 3 pics are the NGK BR6 and the last 5 are the Champion RJ12. Does one look better than another? Thinking I’ll drop the timing and throw in a couple new plugs and see if I can get a couple wot runs tomorrow.

The Champions look better. Keep at it. You're getting there.
