Tell me all about it. I have a friend who just sold his house and is moving there. Tell me the good, bad and ugly. From my little research time I think he is making a big mistake.

    What says FABO???

Some of our friends love it there, and are hoping to one day buy a home there

(They even got a picture of this home on their fridge)

I had a buddy in the Navy that is from there. They are really into hog hunting and trapping there. Real country ass folks.
They use catch dogs and bay dogs. The bay dogs are usually a hound that will sniff out the hog and chase/ bay up the pig. The catch dogs (rots or pits) are then released to fight and wear the pig out. They then capture the pig and neuter it, feed it corn to get the gamey taste out of it, then eat it.
If you're Yankee folks I would imagine you think this is not your idea of fun. If you're country folk I would imagine you would want to meet some locals that do this and join 'em.

A few years ago I went down to Port St. Lucie/Stuart to buy a used air compressor from one of the ship builders down there at the industrial port area.

It's big and flat down in that area only a few feet above sea level, especially down by the Port.

Took off during a light rain that day, thought good day to do the drive. Got to the shop down there, pulled inside and loaded the air compressor and talked for a bit.

Pulled out of their shop and immediately at their intersection to the road I came in on it was under a foot of water, the only way out.

Snaking my way back to I-95 still under water there were some deep spots 2 feet deep. Then a 1 ton Dually is coming at me pushing a wake with his front end. That wave went right over my front end, thought it was going to stall out.

Fortunately kept going and got up to speed on I-95 to dry everything out, was not going to stop for nothing. Made it back with the Alternator light on but all else was well.

So lucky to make it through that. All that rain coming in from that big flat low lying area of those 2 towns really filled up the streets there quick. No good drainage systems around there, like no ditches for the water to run off into.

Would say anywhere within 2 miles of that port would be bad news during 2" rains or more that come into the area.

Was quite a bit better out by I-95, but it is still aweful flat around there and not much for water run off.

You could see that had been a pain for the businesses in that port area as lots of them were closing up and moving on, Including the folks I bought the air compressor from.

A little father out away from the flood zone it is a nice area, lots of new homes, roads and shopping areas to accommodate the growth.

70s to 85° there Winter months, need some good AC. 50-60° at night.

Red Circle is the low lying Port Area.

I love the thought of Florida, there's some really good members down there but I hate humidity, don't need hurricanes, really don't like salt water & I love the world I live in besides those in the county on the other side of the mountains.
Plus shit, gotta watch out for pythons and gators and other venomous snakes. We got 1 that at least will warn you before it strikes lol.
But mostly the humidity, no thanks.

            Yep, name your poison.

            I like not being cold.

Everything is anchored down good for 120 mph hurricanes. Had 3 hurricanes pass within 50 miles here so far, everything stayed put. For some of the neighbors, not so much.

            Yes insects.

Got to have good AC in the house and cars.

Good for a retired environment, having to work out in the heat, not so much.

Have to laugh, yes the salt in the air along the coastline will rust your tools.

Just getting to the point hate fighting the cold Winters anymore, nice to have the option to head South.

I’m as country as I want to be. I noodled this cat on a visit back to Oklahoma (my home state) but them Florida boys are crazy. Noodling is where you dive under water and put your hand in a catfish bed and let it bite your hand. You can’t do that in Florida.

Of all the guys I met in the Navy, Floridians were the most redneck. I always enjoyed drinking with em. I have 3 really good Floridian friends that I would drive across the country for right now. Florida boys and Okies is like peas and carrots.
I was a party animal and my friend from Dade is a party animal. Together at a party, whoah. Hide your women. Get ready to do a jig to some Marshal Tucker. Then we’ll fight somebody. Then we’ll go walk two miles to get a case of beer and have 12 left when we get back. That was a typical Saturday night.

I’m there. Are you sure about high humidity days in the 90’s for months? I’m used to a much faster pace of driving. Speed limits are 10-15 slower than what I’m used to. But it is a nice easy comfortable drive.
On the flip, I-95’s limit is 70. I get passed like I’m standing still by a soccer mom driving a mini van loaded with kids never mind the sport cars. It can be a little tough to find “That House” that is not in a HOA.

Overall, it’s good here. Speaking of born bred and raised people from this state, Excellent people around me. Very warm and welcoming. Easy going and will love to laugh with you.

Even the people that have lived elsewhere say they feel so relaxed and happy they came down.

Is it a good move? Like a jacket or pants, try it on and see if it fits.

Son in law went hunting in northern Florida and came home with a little something…. LMAO, 375 lbs of a little something with tusks…

My son vacations in Florida every year, I only hear good things about his time there, usually a month every year.
He looks to retire there, I'm looking forward to the visits and will be taking a few more cruises from Florida's ports.

I’m not sure about the humidity there in PSL. On the map it looks far enough south that that would be the BAKE that Smokey Yunick said. You know, bake in the south, boil in the north.

And I forgot PSL is on the Atlantic side so I’m not sure how that affects humidity.

I spent some time last night looking at property taxes around PSL. It’s hard getting a read on it. Some of the stuff I was looking at had the property taxes go up 2k in a year or two.

I don’t think my friend as much of a plan, and not nearly enough money to move there and retire. And not have to work at least part time. He is known as a piss poor planner, and this is just one of many piss poor plans. He’s certainly over his skis. I think he is flying down there in early February to find a place to rent. And the clue is he has never been there. He has no clue.

And his house sold so his options are to suck it up and move in March, or move in with his 84 YO father. 6 of one half dozen of the other I suppose.

Don't buy along the coast for a few reasons Hurricanes, Cost of land, Property insurance. If you go 20-25 miles inland your chances of hurricane damage, go down dramatically. Any area near any major city is more expensive. Much of north Florida is still undeveloped. Look closely at flood plain maps. Generally speaking, look at where the really old houses are because they were built on high ground and not prone to flooding.

Where isn't covid rampant? It is very equal opportunity.
We've owned a house on the canals in the Port Charlotte area since the late 1950's when it was built. Hurricane Charley took the roof off in 2004 and that was actually a blessing because when the insurance rebuilt it, we finally got air conditioning and windows that weren't glass shutters. That's hardly every few years. Yeah it is hot, humid, and buggy in the summer but it is a pretty decent place to be from Oct-May if you don't like cold.

@Rat Bastid Prices and taxes vary a lot depending on where your purchasing the house. As well as the neighborhood. Which is a serious concern as well.
                                  bcschief nailed it.

Land prices vary a lot as well. I could have bought more acreage than I know what to do with and built a house on it for about what I got into now. The out laying neighborhood where the nearest shopping is, a bit sketchy. The crime rate was higher than average. But then again having a house built on 10-15 acres 20 minutes away was an interesting thought. I could have put a hell of a house on that with an insane garage.

Your buddy will have to wise up and carefully hunt around. If he is cash limited, he may end up boxing himself in a place not so great.

As far as gator, snakes and other big things that can hurt, kill and eat you, that’s what a pistol if for. Though I doubt you’ll be in “The Woods” needing one.
Do so know what animals are protected though!
BIG DOLLAR FINES for screwing that one up!
