Funny story with the Plymouth truck with the radial. At the good guys show in Loveland CO. He was parked next to the builders choice contenders. Started the truck and was reving it up when thought it wood be cool to hit the smoke valve. Oil in smoke out, and a film of oil all over the 6-7 figure cars. Officials told him to never start it again.

An NOS 440 short block that I bought from Herb McCandless in 1994. Mr. McCandless had bought the remaining inventory from Chrysler after they decided that they didn't need to stock them any more. I paid $750 for it. I now wish that I had bought a few.

I built it to replace the 400 in my 1974 D200. The 400 ran fine, but I wanted a 440. I used the 3769902 heads, oil pan/pickup, exhaust manifolds, valve covers, and other accessories from the 400. I added a Mopar Performance P4286675 camshaft, 440 push rods, 440 distributor, 1978 440 Thermo-quad intake, and 1978 harmonic balancer for a cast iron crankshaft.

31 years later with 158,000 miles added, many heavy use, it still runs great and I've made a few changes such as headers, air cleaner, and valve covers:

I'm not a fan of the Moroso lettering, but they made good, heavy wall, low profile chrome valve covers. Taller valve covers, such as Direct Connection chrome, interfere with the heater box.

I remember when Chrysler sold off all of that stuff. That was when there were a glut of NOS 452 cylinder heads on the market.

Garlits in in the shutdown running his “Dodge” powered fueller to a 6.77 win at Indy in 1967. He had been having trouble getting into the six’s that a few others had and were saying that the old man was washed up. He had vowed not to shave until he was in the six’s so after this run his crew pushed his car back to the line and he did shave some of his beard.
