Originally it was a 273 car, currently an unknown 340 with the original 273 exhaust manifolds. Discovered recently when I went to fix an exhaust leak. Since the 67s didn't have 340s, I'd love a specific recommendation for the exhaust manifold. Can I use any 68-69 Barracuda/A-body 340 exhaust manifold? Car is just a fun driver, not a high performance ride.

Yes you can use the hipo manifolds, that's what I did, but then it may domino into exhaust depending on your current setup.

Yes, any A body 340 or 360 exhaust manifold will work.
And if you have manual steering, you can also get the (MUCH cheaper) 5.2/5.9 magnum exhaust manifolds to fit.

Even a stock 340 is considered a high performance engine. The engineers of the day thought the 340 required special manifolds, so I would look for the 68 / 69 high performance manifolds and install em.

Put a want ad in the Marketplace forums once you figure out the direction you want to go. Swap meets are a better place to find them. You can examine them in person and no shipping charges. Those manifolds are heavy.

You can buy them through classic industries or mancini racing . $1300 for the manifolds, Gaskets and the special hardware installation kit.

Shorty headers at Summit racing $600 with installation kit and you can cut and reuse your front pipes

Keep in mind that the 67 transmission crossmember is pressed for single exhaust, only. If you are going to run dual exhaust, swap it out for a 68 and later piece.

The head pipes are the most difficult part to get done well. A perfect match of the diameter is and keeping it flat is important. IMO the flange gasket sold by Accurate was a slightly better than TTI's. No gasket needed bolting to the heads. Slip the passenger side back from the front by the alternator. Then get the front onto its stud, or maybe its both simalutaneously. I forget. Throw a cloth over the inner fender so it doesn't get scratched. Pictures in the 68FSM are helpful

The 67 A body cars had a "lot" of one year only bits an pieces, the transmission crossmember was one of those pieces. If you look a a 67 Formula S 383 Barracuda, even that crossmember was not pressed for dual exhaust. The driver side pipe hung lower than the passenger side pipe. Find pictures of a true 67 and a true 68 and later crossmember and compare them.

I had 68-70 340 manifolds on my 67 Barracuda 360. Sold them for enough money to buy a set of TTI headers. Then went ahead and bought their 2.5 inch mandrel bent X-pipe exhaust system to back up the headers. Even with low compression stock replacement cast pistons and a mild .450 lift cam, difference in performance was unreal.

As for the trans crossmember, it's been so long I don't remember, but I think I just used a later A body piece. Anyway, it has the cutouts for dual exhaust.

No need for me to compare, our TRUE 67 273 Commando car required no transmission crossmember change when we went to 2 1/2". Now go to 3", maybe, but i have no inclination to deal with 3" exhaust bs.

Not sure what you are referring to, there was only one transmission crossmember bracket in 67, the torsion bar rails are all the same.

This is a 67 slant six car with a 340/724. That is the slant six bracket.

Incorrect, the crossmember from 67-72 is the same. 62-66 is what you are thinking about.

Thanks, I knew I didn't remember having to replace the crossmember when I switched from slant six to 360.

The 273 has much smaller ports than the 340, so using 273 manifolds would definitely impede exhaust flow.

I guess the other piece of the puzzle is the current dual exhaust looks to be 2". Measure at the exhaust tip it reads about 2.25". Presumably the stock manifolds would less hassle than going down the header route which seems like I'd need to upgrade the whole system.

I appreciate all your help.

TTI has head pipes available for your choice of manifolds in your car. I don't know how they are listed on their website but you specify which manifolds you are running.

If you already have 2 1/4 duals, not sure I'd go though the exercise to change exhaust manifolds and exhaust at this time...

IMO the science sez that the important thing is the mufflers have enough flow. If you can go 2.25" on the mufflers, or even better 2.5" then the tubes can be 2.25 with no harm. The tail pipe can be even smaller if the bends aren't too pinched. As the exhaust gases cool they take up less volume. It's important to keep velocity up at lower rpms.

Off the top of my head the head pipe flange for the 340 manifolds is something like 2 5/16" and the tubing usually is nominal 2.25" diameter.

The tricky part is hanging the system. The mufflers originally hang from a bracket. Accurate and others use that. TTI hangs theirs from somehting else - I forget. This changes the angle of the mufflers. The pther thing to look for on your existing mufflers is length and offset of inlet to outlet.

The next trick is the tailpipe. '67 has the cross body gas tank strap. Tailpipes were hung to avoid it. '68 changes the strap and IIRC also changed where the tailpipes hang from (under the rail or the side of the rail). TTI does it differently than Accurate.

I believe accurate exhaust asks for the casting number's off of the manifolds you intend to use. TTI, I'm not sure how they identify what style headpipe to supply ?

I’d like to see how a left side manifold could be made to fit a 67-76 model. From what I can tell, the outlet aims right at the clutch linkage in a manual car and the cross bar linkage in a column shifted automatic.
If there is a way, I would appreciate knowing how to do it.

Here's TTI's catalog page for head pipes. See "Information required when ordering"
