I have a 512 with a leaking oil pump, fresh motor but the guy it came from told me it leaked and he tried everything to get it to stop. I’m thinking I’ll just replace the pump. High volume, high pressure or both? What do you guys run?

Does it have a high capacity pan? If so, I'd run a high volume pump.

The REAL way to know what oil pump tyou need is by the bearing clearances.

A high perf engine doesn't automatically néed a high volume oil pump.

That's true, but I was assuming he didn't want to tear the engine down.

I’ve always run HV pumps on my big blocks, everything from race engines to junkyard specials. The only one I didn’t I had bearing issues with.

I’ve done high volume in the past but not high pressure. Thought I’d ask opinions before purchasing.

Mopar Performance used to offer a HV HP pump. It was nice. Clearanced and blueprinted Melling HV pump with the MP high pressure spring. Those things would MOVE some oil. lol

I don’t know I guess I’ve never actually watched the oil pressure during a pass but I’ve turned my junk 7200 rpm for thousands of passes and the bearings have been perfect at the refresh.

Check the bolt length and clean the threaded hole in the block. Seen them with the bolts just bottomed before the pump completely sealing the gasket.

One thing to remember that we have seen the more pressure the pump makes the more wear on the pump drive gear. You'll chew a bronze gear up quickly that are used with roller cams. Also wear the cam with a standard iron style. Just thought I would mention that. HV or Pressure is not always your friend.

Yeah, I'm more concerned with identifying & correcting a cause for the leak, before bolting anything else on.
1) Are one or more of the capscrews bottoming in the block threads?
2) Any evidence of damage/alteration to the bore or mounting surface?
3) Verify w/a machinist's square the pump body is square, shaft hub to mounting surface. And check the machining where they meet for an excessive radius that is preventing the pump from seating.

Just replacing the pump may or may not fix the issue, until you determine the cause you will just be throwing parts at it.
I personally use milodon billet hi volume oil pumps.

I understand that…. I got this engine knowing there was a leak from the pump area. He thought the casting might be bad because he had tried everything already. I’m assuming the pump will need replaced once I take it off to investigate, I was trying gather information about what pumps people are running.

The pump body casting, or block casting???

Could that engine have been dropped. If so the block may be cracked. Usually People buy Cheap engine stands and when they break and a big block gets dropped the pump is the first thing to hit the ground. If so you could have it spray welded. Here is a fresh build that came in it happened to.customer had it on a cheap stand.

If main/rod clearance is on the loose side and or you'rerunning full groove bearings too, High volume pump for sure, or you'll have some low idle oil psi once the motor is nice n hot...
If you also rev it up 7000+ rpm, stick a high pressure spring in that HV pump so it'll psi higher at rpm.

Many turn it 7k+ while the pump is maxed at 60 psi hot. Starting to be in the danger zone like that.

8 yrs at 8500 rpm shifts with a SB stroker Standard pump. Never sucked the pan dry. Your talking 5500 stall 456 gears on the highway cruising at 65 and 70 MPH. Making 1/4 mile passes in the mid 10's with a 3650 lb car. Now if you have a wore out engine or a badly machined engine. Get yourself a High pressure, High Volume pump to get more miles out of it.

Did you know Harleys idle a 2-3 lbs of pressure. Also some small little 2 and 3 cylinder Diesels. If the clearances are right and the oil is there to cushion under no load pressure is the enemy. To much pressure washes the bearing out quicker, My old tow truck had dippers on the rods no pressure at all. Still ran strong after 60 years. And it always had weight on it
