Good Day
Your never to old to screw up.
I purchase a Rollmaster 5300 timing set for use in a 87 D150. The screw up came when I installed the crank gear. To many possibilities and I THOUGHT I was lining up on the '0' for the crank gear, but, alas, I was wrong. To compound the screw-up I didn't catch it until the motor was re-installed.
Now for the question; What do you use for a crank gear puller? Not a lot of clearance between the gear and block for convention jaw or clam-shell pullers. Not wanting to use heat (re:torch) to heat the gear and everything I see that MIGHT work is geared toward bow-tie motors, of VW. Hate to spend $70+ bucks on a crap shoot.
I hope I'm not the only one who has ever had this issue,.

You can put the crank bolt in and use a 2 finger Faucet handle puller to remove the gear.

The crankshaft timing gear should only have a slight press fit. It's actually clamp loaded by the damper hub and crankshaft bolt. Remove the bolt and damper and use a 2 jaw puller to remove it. 65

I’ve always used two big screwdrivers. Stick them in behind it and pull them towards you.

Look at a Faucet handle puller. The fingers are very thin, may be 1/8". Don't know if Home Depot has it, but good chance Plumbing Supply would. Probably Amazon or Ebay.

If the Rollmaster fits anywhere near as tight as an OE, that ain't comin' off with any of the above suggestions, usually it takes a little heat and a real puller.....and there is no damper bolt...it's a press-fit.

Something like this wouldn't be hard to make.

ah the VW bug crank gear puller... also works well enough to get your pitman arm off...

think i was naughty and used a 2 piece bearing puller centred between the two rows of teeth, had to knock off the cam sprocket though. with the engine in the right place it came off the dowel, but i can knock my cam back slightly which helps to get the sprocket off the boss. (putting it all back was harder and it really shouldn't be)

although i don't recall it gave much of a fight... few taps on the key to stop it riding up.... the romac balancers however tight as hell....

True enough but you probably know there is a 3/4-16 UNF tapped hole in the crank. Most likely filled with decades of gunk but it's there.

Okay, a small prybar or screwdriver should do it. 65
I have used 2 big screwdrivers ,one on each side 180 apart , (if you got the room ! also have used a couple of right angle pry bars , (not sure what their really called) , but they were
an automotive tool...have to take the rad out for this one tho...
