Rooting an android..

Trying to get 4.2 on an old tablet so I can stream History Channel that requires 4.2 but Im stuck on 4.1.2. Its a Motorola MZ617 Xyboard 10.1 that moto has abandoned development on. All the "one click root" apps are BS. Tried "Kingroot" but could never find the real app, only phishing clones. Can I download an APK into an android folder and just run it with an app manager? What folder do I put it in transfering it from a PC dpownload?

I used to have a Root program for Android but since I’ve switched to Apple phone and IPad I deleted the program.

Man I'm not gonna lie I fell pretty dumb right now! I thought the title said rooting FOR android. I thought it was a pro android device post. Like yay go android. Then I started reading and was like wth. Haha.
