School me on hemi blocks, please

I heard Tom Cotter mention in one episode of Hagerty Insurance's "The Barn Find Hunter" that an early hemi block included the bell housing as part of the block casting, which made it weigh a lot more than other blocks. I was not aware of this. What is the scoop? Thank you very much.

yes, the later version didn't have that. He did say "early" so I figured this is what he meant.
