Just brought home a 4/1/71 cast 360 with standard bore. May be a foundation for a future stroker motor. Got 915 heads (small valve) a new max velocity Crane Cam kit, crank, new timing set, new Edelbrock Performer RPM intake and a 90 deg oil filter adaptor.... $220.
I will have the block cleaned up and sonic checked and magnafluxed. It has Letter markings on the oil pan rail in between the cylinders. Some A. B and C?
Don't ever recall seeing that before. Anyone know what they represent?

The A, B, C & D letters in those areas were marked during engine assembly so the builder knew which piston bores required each piston size.

Never heard that before. I also wondered if there was any way to tell what the engine came out of.

The partial VIN from the passenger side of the block could help narrow that down some.

I tried looking it up with no success.

1C229565 clear as day.

1 = 1971 model year.

C = Jefferson, MI assembly plant, so it is from a Chrysler of some type.

(They also made Imperials there, but the Imperials were all big block cars)

I have checked it over pretty well. No number after the 360 for the casting revision. No noticeable parting lines, everything looks pretty good so far.
