Does "early" mean an LA engine instead of a Magnum (reversed water pump rotation)? The main difference in LA engines were the location of the timing tab. Early ones had a bolt-on sheet metal tap on passenger side, later (~1970+) had a cast-in tab on the driver's side. The change corresponded to the newer aluminum water pump with lower inlet on passenger side. However, I posted photos of 4 different timing covers I found (search my name).
