I'm having a hard time finding something with an actually GOOD quality tuner. I want a receiver because I don't blootoof and all that stuff and I don't want to. We have several high power FM stations around here that I can pick up. I have a good, high quality outdoor antenna on a pole about 25 or so feet up. I HAD an older Pyle receiver, blootoof, USB, AUX and it was probably LGBTQABCDEFG, too. The receiver in it bit the dust. I just got a new "Donner" receiver today from Amazon. It wouldn't even pick up anything. Acted like the antenna wasn't even there. I know the antenna's good, because I have enough coax to reach into Vixen and plug into her radio and it picks all kinda stuff. What's an actual decent brand with a good quality receiver?
 
I got a 15 year old Sony system thats great but they don’t make the boom box units with separate speakers anymore. Maybe look for a new Pioneer tuner receiver or even a vintage unit?
 
Aiwa used to be the great one.....and those old Sonys were too. Now we are all looking for something decent. The kids all use Bumpboxx speakers and play their phones. The volume is def there if you are up for it.
 
I've bought several vintage component digital tuners at thrift for an average price of about 10 bucks.

80's and 90's vintage receivers are about 20-40 bucks.

I'm currently running a Phillips amp with a Pioneer tuner at the shop, and I've got a stack of at least 3 receivers for backup. Mostly Sony.
 

I have better luck at smaller thrifts-

Lighthouse
Meals on Wheels
and a local one called CARE.

All three have a WAY better "man" section than GW or SA.

Last week, I got a pair of "old car" wiper blade refills for 4 bucks and a set of impact sockets for 10 bucks.

We don't even go to Goodwill anymore since we discovered they were using unethical selling practices.
 
I reckon I'll just be patient and keep checking the Christian thrift store in town. I'm sure something will eventually turn up. Thanks for the ideas yall. Moochas grassy ***.
 
I have a lot of vintage receivers, they are great. Even a 25 watt older unit will make plenty of volume. Sony, Pioneer, Sansui, Marantz, Kenwood, Harman Kardon, etc. No AV units with multiple channels, just plain stereo receivers. Any of the above will have a good tuner in it.

That's what I'm after. All that's out there is mostly home theater junk.
 
You might want to just pick up a quality car unit & feed it w/a 12V transformer, with the right antennae they do a better job of AM/FM reception than any of My old stuff, sad but true....
 
Yep, a bddy of mine 40 years ago ran an awesome car setup in his living room off of a car battery and charger.

Yeah, actually there's one in Macon. We don't go to Macon often, but do on occasion.
 
We have them here Jackie, for the 1st couple years the prices were ok. Now ridiculous, as much as retail if not more at times.

I think when my receiver in the shop takes a dump, I'm going to do like @Killer6 suggested and make one with an old Pioneer car radio and a laptop power supply I have laying around. If I got rid of that big ol stereo receiver sitting on my workbench....it would give me more room to pile some junk that "I might need" someday!

You probably don't have a collection of CD's do you. I ripped all of mine to MP3s and loaded them on USB/flash drives. One in the shop, one in my Durango, one in the Barracuda (original radio converted by Aurora sound. Don't have to listen to the DJs, sports, or politics talk. Just music.

Of course now finding a boom box with a USB drive is getting to be a problem. I guess we're getting old.

I like a good DJ. Lots of options, thats for sure.
