ok on my 72 dart I put in a new speedometer cable along with the a new speedometer gear. I hooked up the cable to the speedometer and trans and they slid right in so I went to check it to see if it was working and as soon as I went forward it pegged the needle at 120 and didn't return to 0, any ideas on possible things that caused this.

What caused is a dirty dried out speedometer head.
Welcome to the rabbit hole.

try mopar restos in sumerville Ga i purchased 1 from him for $125.00 works like a finely wound clock.

Probably worn input shaft bushing and the needle may be rubbing on the faceplate.
