hi guys, my car is currently having some stalling issues. she stalls mainly when sitting a a light or stop sign. no problems when driving. sometimes stalls on backing up. she also sometimes has hard time starting, she'll crank anc crank without ignition.

how can i pinpoint what is the problem?

I had the idle speed up a bit high and it was doing well. but i really didnt like the sound of the higher idle. so I took it back down and shes stalling again.

I also recently changed my fuel filter and found my fuel to be very dirty, I wonder if that might be part of my problem. (the backing up and stalling may indicate this?) she was real good after first replacing fuel filter, but after stilling idle for awhile she started to fade.

I'm doubt she needs a tune up but she might (how do i know? check point gaps and dwell time etc. as if I was just doing tune up but without replacing points, condensor, and rotor?) ( I am debating buying a mopar performance ignition system, instead of tuneup kits over and over)

please help with advice thanks

Sounds like too much or too little fuel at idle. You should be able to look down the carb and see if it's flooding. If it's running too lean, adding a little gas from a primer can will smooth out and raise the idle. You might have a plugged idle circuit if you have crap in the fuel system.

Another new fuel filter might help. You might hold the throttle open and close the butterfly with your finger and cause the engine vacuum to suck the trash out of the idle circuit. It doesn't help every time. Once in a while I get lucky.
Could be a vacuum leak or even a defective pcv valve.

Me thinksss its fuel related, you need fuel and spark if the 2 are not in faze, problems . Think about it if you have to raise the idle a bit, than your giving it more fuel and air. thus it stays running, hows your air filter? Somethings wrong with you carb thus the dirty gas.If it were me I would pull my carb clean and rebuild it new fuel pump and flush tank and lines. No fuel problems now.

I'd say HELL YEAH on the Mopar electronic ignition....worth it's weight in gold, esp on a slant 6 where it sucks doing points. It's not your fuel filter.....if it was, you'd know it as soon as you took off (fuel starvation) If it couldn't pass enough fuel @ idle, trust me, that thing wouldn't even go 20 MPH.

First thing I'd do is block the wheels and let it idle in drive. Then play with the idle mixture screw and see if you can make it stay running. Also, check all the intake manifold bolts and carb hold down nuts/bolts. If your PCV hose or any other vacuum hoses look suspect, change 'em. And last, just go ahead and rebuild the carb yourself.

nice easy things to try, of course she not stalling for me right now...(she'll wait till i hit the next drive through with someone behind me)
did the vacuum suck thing anyway, maybe it will help

Air filter is clean.
carb is a carter carb and it is leaking some fuel on my intake manifold so it kinda needs a rebuild anyway...

I like your replace/rebuild whole system and forget about it approach. I'm dreaming of replacing whole ignition system just to verify my belief that it is the fuel system.

maybe the pump cant get fuel through filter well in idle, but when throttled pump sucks more and overcomes "dirty fuel inertia"? that was my thought

checked multiple hoses and all looks well, I'll play with the ideas you guys shared next time she starts stalling on me...

thanks
