Steering box removal/replacement

Google it, there will be a youtube video. Its pretty easy just a few bolts to the k frame and a pin in the steering shaft sleeve that locks the shaft to the box

If you have headers the front lower control arm has to be removed. Move the torsion bar back. Remove rotors. The calipers have to be put out of the way. Steering knuckle and back plate come off. Just did one on a 73 Dart 340 H code with a stick.

Just did it on a 1971 Demon........No Headers

This worked for me.

Drive out the pin holding the coupler to the steering gear
Drop steering column inside vehicle.
Slide steering column and coupler (as a unit) rearward off steering gear.
Wheels turned all the way to the right.
Remove pitman Arm.
Remove nut from engine mount isolater on D/S
Jack Engine up on left side.
Unbolt steering gear from K frame.
Twist, turn and F with it until it comes out. :)

BTW......I installed a stud where one of the steering gear bolts go and that really helped when I re-installed it.

***NOTE*** be gentle manipulating the steering column as you may pull the shaft out of the coupler, and/or damage the nylon pins indexing the 2 parts of the steering shaft.

Good luck.

IMHO...

Disconnect everything that needs to come off BEFORE you unbolt it from the frame.

You can unbolt the pitman arm from the box OR from the tierod / cross bar, all depends on what you are doing.

Roll pin from the steering connector, be sure to unbolt the steering column from the car and support it so you don't damage the steering shaft. And use a proper roll pin punch and backup the other side so you are not damaging the input shaft bushing / bearing

Hoses last so oil is not everywhere
