I pulled my steering column today to shorten the shaft so i can install my borgeson coupler. What is the the circled bar in the engine bay on the steering shaft for? I have a floor shifter and if this is not needed I would like to chop it off. Picture not mine Bills70's pic.

1970 cars had one year only steering columns with an arm for the lockout provision.

Exactly. You'll either need to jam that lever with something or the collar assembly itself if you want to get the key out of the ignition. Was designed so auto had to be in park or manual in reverse to remove the key.

Love the new info.

Depending on your skill level- actually remove that part completely.

chances are somebody on here is looking for one.
