Before I break something, how does the center come off of this steering wheel? Plastic center cap has to come off? Does it have a tang on one side that goes into a recess like the older Deluxe wheel?

Take a small screwdriver and pop the plastic fratzog emblem off the middle, it will be obvious then. Be careful as there is a tab that fits in a slot, you may break it. If I remember correctly pry from the right side of the emblem...

What does the FSM say?

Last night on GYC they were assembling a 71 roadrunner steering column and the entire center "Y" snapped in.

Do t know if it is the same but looks like it

Thank you! It's like the Deluxe then, it has a tab on the left. It just is so damn tight, hard to get in there!
Thanks again!

I do not have a FSM for my '72. My '69's FSM covers most things. I was just having trouble getting in behind this cover and wanted to make sure.
Thank you!.

Tell you what, that thing does not want to come out of there. Going in and see if Grave Yard cars is still in the trash bin. Some how I missed that segment on the steering wheel column assembly.

So it looks like that whole triangular piece snaps into the wheel? Guess I will go out and try that.

Got it. Carefully got under about where I thought it might attach and carefully pulled with a hook, at all 3 places, and it didn't break.
Thank you all.

Oh shoot, I didn't see it was a later wheel that the whole piece snapped into, I thought it was a 69-70 wheel, sorry. Glad you got it apart!

No worries! This is the Deluxe wheel that was on my '69 , before I found an orginal one. The center cap medallion does come out for it.

I'll just to throw my $.02 in here for anyone else wanting to do the same thing......On those hard plastic triangle sections, I prefer to use a couple of putty knives on each side of the legs to help avoid breaking them. After this many years, they can be fragile as potato chips.....especially here in the sun baked southwest.
