I recently purchased a 48 plymouth into which someone swapped a small block mopar engine. After looking up the casting numbers what I thought was probably a 318 is actually a 273 with a late (december I think) 1964 casting date. I'm assuming the engine started it's life in an a-body based on that. It appears stock with the 2 barrel carb but it is connected to a later 904 tranny (not pushbutton).

I recently lucked into an Edelbrock D64 intake (which is correct for my early heads) and while I'm sure dual quads are too much for the little 273 with the low compression pistons I'd like to run it anyway. Has anyone else had success with this combination and what did you run for carbs? Ideally I'd like to find something inexpensive to run for carbs but I also realize that you get what you pay for sometimes. Did you run progressive linkage on the carbs? I haven't been inside the engine but I would guess it's still running the stock camshaft. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Welcome aboard!

Nice intake. The problem here is that only Carter carbs will fit on a forward face, not side ways. The smallest Carter style carbs you can get new are 500 cfm AFB or AVS from Edelbrock. I would run the AVS and tune the spring loaded secondary air door tight, unless you can get a set of 400 cfm Carter AFB's or WCFB Carters. Those are found on dual quad Fury's, Corvette's and some Buick's.

The problem with old carbs, the 400 cfm-ers even more is there ancient, difficult and pricey to get rebuilt, (unless your handy with tools and have done carbs)

Another member and I have this intake (On a larger engine) with 2 X 600 AFB, and Edelbrocks air cleaner, fuel line and linkage. They work excellent. You also have a choice on how to set up the carbs.

What we have found is a slight delay in opening the front carb delivers a really nice off the line "Slow" drive away feeling. Something non-aggressive and easy to control in the parking lots or while grand-ma is in the back seat.

By the time you hit a wide open throttle, both carbs are open at there max. It takes a bit of tinkering around with the linkage to get it where you like it best. It is worth every bit of the entry fee and tinker time when your done.

There is a fella here selling 2 Buick dual quad carbs now. I do not know this guy or the condition of the carbs in any way shape or form or how he himself is.

I have an article on a 273 8bbl setup. They took the air door out of the secondary carb...2 Carter 500's....

Pishta, any chance you could either scan that or tell me where it was originally from? Thanks.

Two 500 carbs should work OK, they have to be Carter or Edelbrock.

I using that set up on a 340 engine, works great. I did remove the air door from the back carb and I also lighten the weights up on the front carb ar door.

The secondary jets need around .077--stock is like .092. The primary jetting is close to right but the secondaries are too rich

Now your engine is so wimpy, it might just run best by just using the rear carb and just have the front carb provide the idle feed but when you do get a better engine--a 318 block with those 273 heads be just great and KB has higher compression 318 pistons for sale brand new
