Well i have been thinking of starting the restoring process on my scamp. I want to do some engine work. It has a 318 with an edelbrock 4 bbl intake, stock or slightly bigger cam, bored .020 over. Here is what i am wanting to do. I am wanting to put a 4.00 crank in my 318 block and use the same pistons if i can. My question is, what kinda of head will i need to run? Will stock 360 heads work or even the edlebrock head? I figured it up to be bout 383 cubic inches with the bore and stroke combo. It will be mainly a street cruiser but want it to perform if need be.

Just trying to get idea, any and all ideas are welcome.

I dont know if it will work, if so you might need custom pistons because the longer stroke will put just about any piston way out of the hole for sure, there may be other issues also. I am sure some of the guys will let you know.

You'll need custom pistons..why a 318 you'd be better off starting with a 340 or 360 block...
 
Because he has a 318 and a purchase of a 360 block will offset the expensive cost of the pistons.

You can not use the stock pistons. They'll be expensive.
At 383 or more cubes, even a stock Edelbrock head will need some work done to it.
If yo ran the Edel. head OOTB dead stock, it would be limited a little bit.

Yes,but he'll get more cubes out of a 340/360 block..and the price of a 360 block is cheap,i bought a complete 360 for $275.00 i'm sure there out there even cheaper,by the way a good quality set of stroker pistons will cost $600.00 plus..The Edelbrock heads will work just fine with some mild port out of the box..

You can get Hyper-U's for alot less and a fordged set is not a mandotory item to use.

Figure if he gets a 360 block, that's about half the price of the good pistons you priced up. Now, price wise, it's a wash unless you add in time and gas money spent of getting the 360 block.

So far, the way I see your wording is spend 275 on block and then 600 on pistons for a total of 875 for the extra cubes.

If he was really interested in extra cubes, he'll go that way. Sometimes it's not the cubes but just simply useing what you have. I'm not arguing that more cubes will equal merrier movement or a good idea.
 
keith black sells pistons for 318 .030 overbore...less then 400 bucks...

stock 360 heads will work...eddy will work better...

.030 318 will give ya 390 cubes....
 
I too would say look into the 349. I would really think about what you want as far as a street/strip motor and go from there. I used to daily drive a 383 with a huge cam that others would never consider daily driver status.

either one of the heads will work. how much compression, cam, ported or not, money, etc. will all play into what ones will be the better choice.

as far as the 318 I say why not. there is always the why not question like asking the /6 guy why not a V8? or the guy with a 340/360 why not a 440, it for me comes down to what do I have and can afford.

With the pocket ported Edel. heads and a big(ish) low centerline cam (AKA 106) it'll live well on the street.

You give him the 360 block and Im sure he will be glad to use it.

Diamond has an off the shelf piston for the 390 stroker combo but they are going to be about $500.
 
Well, maybe i will just put a slightly bigger cam in mine and call it good enough. I have a guy at work that has a 360 in parts that he said he could sell. With all the work and money that it could take to do the stroker 318 it could be more cost effective to just get a create motor. Maybe like the ones advertised in Mopar Muscle.

ok, here is a different question. What would be a good cam to run for good performance and have a good lopey sound?
 
That is very broad. In a stroker? Of what size? or the 318?

What gear ratio do you have again. And what converter do you have, stock or modified with what stalll rating?

lopey sounds come from a lower C-line. Most cams come with a 110. The larger the engine, the lower it should be for performance. A 110 is a good sounding cam in a 318 mild in a 360, mello on a 390+ engine. Also, ramp rates have an effect. Theres more to it than that, but that will do for now and it's all you'll need for a lopey sound.
 
It would be just for my 318. Small over bore of .020. Stock trans and the rear gear will be 3.55.

$500.00...thats a little low,the diamonds in my stroker were $575.00 3 years ago i recently check the price they're up around $700.00 now...
 
Stroked 340 is right - the Diamonds are a real hit in the wallet....I went with the KB forged slugs.

I'm building a 318/390 with:

Eagle cast 4" crank - $299 Summit
Eagle I beams inc bolts and pins - $239 Mancini
KB forged 846 flat tops, $425 from Mancini - had to get them drop shipped to the docks.

They'll end up about .018 out of the hole, + a .055th head gasket and they yield around 10.6:1 with a .030 overbore and open chamber heads.

Ive been told that with an XS282S Comp solid it'll make 420HP all day with ported J heads.
 
Hughes also has a complete 318-390 kit using kb pistons of either flat or dished depending on desired comp but after talking to Bobby at BJR I am leaning towards his 349 build same power& torque{ or more } less side wall pressure and more likely engine durability and you can do it with your 318 heads ,no matter which way you decide to go call him { or pm him here }and ask him about it he really is the man when it comes to the 318 also read the tech archive here by him labeled 349 On The Cheap
