He got laid off from an on the road fork truck repairman where he worked for the past 6 years. He and 3 other guys got permanently laid off when they lost 5-6 big contracts because of the oil line being shutdown. Between the unemployment and added money if and when he started getting it would have been doing ok but he wanted to work. He interviewed Saturday and starts tomorrow at a very well known smaller chassis shop. This guys puts out some beautiful work and he’s going to teach Matt how to Tig weld and build roll cages and chassis’s. He won drag week a few years ago in a 7 second nitrous Chevy powered mustang. He sold it and is building a turbo car now. Matt took a pay cut but he was promised a nice raise as he learns the trade. They work four 10 hour days with weekends off and overtime available. His new life begins tomorrow morning. Anything from building headers, fab 9 inch rearends, to total chassis’s.
 
Sounds like he is a "chip off the old block".

Life is great when our kids do well. In this world they have to go get what they want cause it ain't easy. You have a right to be proud you have a son that "goes and gets it".

Im thinking his work ethic may have something to do with getting hired. On the road,mobile repair can be a tough gig, obviously the new employer was aware of that.

my son spent the last 4 years in the far north as a HD mechanic, just got hired locally,im happy he has a home based job now. We can hang out more.

Any man that "wants to work" (as you said), rather than collect an unemployment check was raised right. Sounds like you steered him in the right direction.

Good on your boy for seeing an opportunity to learn a skill that will last the rest of his life. No telling where this will all lead. All us old guys retire sooner or later. It might be his name on the door someday!
 
30 years ago i lived 10 miles out of town,no licence and go laid off from work. So i collected unemployment insurance. Was a total run around,no money, new baby at home and they cut me off for no reason. Pretty much bankrupted me. Never collected again. If i could find a way i would never pay into it again either.
My son knows the drill, work and get paid. There is no other option. If i taught him anything, that was it.
 

The Nova on the Website looks exactly like my Brother in law's he sold In Ma. 10 years or so ago. Had no cage then .

I read the first 3 words and smiled...it got even bigger when I read the whole thing! This isn't one of them "green jobs" that was promised to all the oil line worker? Yeah, didn't think so. Good for him!
 
Such a great opportunity to learn from an experienced person like that! Awesome luck for him to get in that door. Hope they can work well together.
 
We were standing in line to checkout this AM and talking to Mexican lady that said she has 2 small businesses. She can not hire any help, they can all sit home and draw unemployment.
I told her I would go work for her IF she can hire a wore out 73 year old man, mostly deft, half blind, and has one knew that pops out of joint a lot. She said she was tempted!
