I type this with a tear in my eye.

I just received a call from my son at his workplace. He needed to talk to someone. A truck was being unloaded with a loader, and a pipe rolled off of the opposite side. It landed on and killed the truck driver. My son was not the loader operator. I don't know the details, whether the supports were up, working in danger zone, etc, but this is a sad reminder to me how fragile and temporary our lives are.
Everyday that we live, we make decisions that ultimately affect ourselves and those around us. Sometimes those decisions can have a detrimental effect.

Please be careful my FABO friends. Life is precious, and your family wants to see you alive and well at the end of the day.

    Prayers sent to the family.

About 3 years ago a contractor working on one of the buildings where I worked fell from a ladder and was killed, he didn't have his safety harness attached. That still bothers me to this day. Your son and the family of the truck driver have my condolences.

Had that kind of experience yesterday on our way home from the mountain riding are snowmobiles. It was a bluebird day and we had a beautiful time but just as we are getting off the highway the traffic backed up in front of an ambulance. It was a motorcyclist who was killed. I didn't make it home before I had already called my son on my hands-free device and check on him and my grandson. He sold his motorcycle when my grandson was born...

Who wears a harness when working on a ladder?

Sorry about your son. Seeing this stuff is traumatic. I saw a guy fall from a roof when he lost grip. He turned out to be okay but injuries have the effect of making others suddenly feel vulnerable. THAT can lead to making mistakes that one might not make.
You hear of Police that are forced to second guess their actions after a recent incident. This can happen in other segments of society too.
Safety is more of a state of mind than a tangible thing. I'd rather rely on my own wits than an harness, a barrier or anything else. A person with good common sense may never incur an injury while an idiot in a plastic bubble may still get hurt daily.

Its OSHA rules now days to wear a harness and safety hook when working over 5 feet off the ground in factory's, the poor guy had his harness on per rules but hadn't reattached it.

My heart is also heavy in an hour I'm going to say goodbye to my cousin who was one of my closest friends of 30+ years. It puts your priorities in a different order. I feel what your going threw...

Terrible news. Everyone needs to stay safe out there. When we are more than 3 feet aloft outside and can strap off to something, we have to. In 20 years of working at 18 feet, I have never fallen, and my strap has saved me once when my ladder footing sunk in mud and the hooks had the ladder sliding down the mid span strand. Hooks finally hit the strand and flipped the ladder out from under me but I was still strapped around the ladder rung and the strand. I hung there for a minute while the customer scrambled to get my ladder seated again. whole thing happened in about 3 seconds. If he were not watching me work, I could have been up there a few more minutes while wrestling with my ladder that was still attached to me.

Pouring a concrete slab a couple weeks ago, the driver was not watching my hand signals to STOP & he just kept coming.

He knocked one of two support posts out from the overhead roof while I was under it.

Some days, it pays to be quick!

Safety first always - no matter what.

My condolences to his family & friends.

Tragic occurrence. Happens all too frequently. 3 men I knew personally were killed in construction accidents. Shook me to the core. God's blessings to all involved.

Anytime we see death ,it shakes most of to the core. It should as it reminds us of the people important is our lives, yes life is fragile and never a "given".
On the ranch, people witness birth and yes death. It helps give a belief in an Almighty to many. I have to wonder if the person in the getto that sees birth and , yes death almost daily close up, if such gives them the same sense?

So sad to hear. Death occurs daily but when a man loses his life trying to put food on the table it's just strikes a cord IMO. Trying to handle your business and end up on the losing end of the stick... Sux....

Thanks for the reminder. Hazards on the job can have serious consequences. Myself and my coworkers have a safe practice regiment but anything is possible. Long time employees, like myself have to be careful about complacency.

I pulled a flatbed trailer for many years. I learned to always stay away from the trailer while unloading especially when loading/unloading anything that can roll off the trailer.

Often you need to be on the trailer deck but you had better be on your toes.

Recently I have seen where drivers are being prohibited from the area when loading/unloading.

My son is home from work. The day was rough. It was a "national" case as the driver is from Quebec and this happened in Alberta. He said they said no fault will be placed. It is a terrible tragedy.

As I mentioned to my boy, it is very sad. The guy left Quebec on a job and came to Alberta and died.
I know many drivers and many who work in these types of industry.
Quick does not explain the reality of how things happen.

Omg that is horrible. I hate to see such tragedy. It just shows how fragile life can be. While I have never seen (thank God) a work place death iv seen my share of hands and fingers removed. I work in a factory with machines with alot of pinch points sometimes complacency will catch up to you. Be safe and remember you work to live not live to work!! Make it home to your family!

Unfortunately some things that are seen can't be unseen..... But you are right about quick. Things change faster than the speed of light. I try to always be a good stewart about safety. I am in Manufacturing and remind people when I see less than stellar decision making in regards to safety that a machine has no emotion and could less about you..... Same goes for material being unloaded from a truck....

                                                Everyone stay safe....
