I have owned the car for almost 14 years now, and have made miner changes to it in that time but it is pretty much how I bought it. Now is the time to build it how I want it so here goes my build thread. The car started out as a 340 4 speed car and has been a race car all its life, with 33,000 miles on it, a 1/4 mile at a time. The plan is to build it into a pro-charged 6.1 Hemi powered street car. I have been collecting parts for the last 2 years since I pulled the engine and took it off the track. The last time it ran it went 11.64 @ 119mph with a 1.68 60ft. The engine is a high compression 340,stock ported heads, mech cam, manley h-beam rods, victor 340 intake with a AED 750 carb. I have started the tear down and will post more as it goes. Here are some pics of whats been done so far.

I have the new S&W 10 point cage that is being installed at the end of the month. I picked up a Aeromotive A1000 fuel pump. I will be getting a new fuel cell this week to fab up the trunk floor when the cage goes in. I have a new headliner and some interior parts and am currently waiting for the new Alterkation front end to come. I will try and update this as much as I can as I progress with the rebuild.

Got some more work done on the car today. More of removing stuff. Had a little of a scare when removing the roll bar, seems like who did the roll bar missed half of the weld as I only had to cut part of the way around and give a small pull and there was a pop and out it came, both sides. Sure glad I did not find out the hard way.

Had a busy week and did not get much time to work on the car. Saturday I had a conference for work, got home around 5, and got to work around 8 in the evening and was finished by 12:30. I was able to get the rest of the bar out and grind off all the welding. I also was able to get the wife out to help and I have the pics to prove it. I also picked up the new fuel cell.

If that was your ONLY bad weld, you probably would have been okay. The important question might be, "Why did it rust?"

You're going to want to make sure that you insure that the new roll bar/cage doesn't also corrode.

Let us know what you think of the SW roll bar, I've been on their mailing list and think they make good stuff, but some first hand experience is always valuable.

As always thanks for the car porn.

    Regards,

    Joe Dokes

There were 5 bad welds, the floor on the side bars, both sides, the rear down tubes on the floor, and they missed on weld on the top of the rear down bar and main hoop. I am glad I found it cutting it out and not in an accident. Kinda scary. I have know idea why the bar rusted like it did, maybe with the shitty welds it was able to collect moisture as it was sitting out side when I first looked at the car. It had lexan windows and leaked water I am sure. The plates look like they are rusty in the picture but they are not.

Probably from sitting outside. Five bad welds? Looks like you made the right decision to cut the roll bar out and re-do it. Best of luck with the project.

    Keep the car porn comin'

Dropped the car off and went over some stuff. Put in the old headliner so we have an idea of how high the cage needs to be from the roof. After unloading the rest of the tubes and some bench racing over a beer we went for a ride in his 61 Rambler. It is a custom build with a Skyline RB 25 engine and trans, all I can say is man did the thing move. Here is a link to his build thread http://forums.nicoclub.com/rbambler-build-thread-t523749.html?hilit=rbambler
His workmanship is second to none, and I am glad I was introduced to him to do the work I am not able to do. He is also helping with the build a 79 Fairmont drag radial car, http://www.yellowbullet.com/forum/showthread.php?t=432473. I will keep everyone updated as the work progresses.

Just had these come to me so I thought I would post them. First one is the car loaded and ready to be taken to Nolan's. Car rapped and ready for work. New pates bent and installed, and the main hoop sitting in the car.

Also has anyone used the S&W cage? The halo seems very narrow.

Picked the car up on Thursday, brought it home and put it in the garage. I was going out the door on Friday and grabbed and few crappy photos. Was busy Saturday picking up a friends 73 Road Runner. So today I was able to remove the dash, new tin work and seats. I was able to clean up all the grinding dust and crap from all the fab work. Here are the crappy pics I took. I also heard from RMS and the new Alterkation front end should be arriving sometime this week. Hope to start the install soon.

Have not been able to spend as much time on the car as I wanted but have been getting some work done. Mostly sanding and removing stuff getting ready to pain the floor and trunk floor. But Christmas came early for me this year, even though it was not a present.

Not much progress to show as of late, mostly sanding and getting parts and pieces ready for paint. Sanded the trunk floor down to the metal, clean and add some seam sealer then I can paint it. Will post some pics when painted.
