timing cover gasket

is there a trick on mouinting the new timing chain cover with new rubber oil gasket on a motor that has the pan still attached? Thought you could slide it in there and tighten but Im having a heck of a time. dropping the pan on a 65 is tough.

Can you just loosen the pan enough? I never had luck trying what you are doing on any engine with a timing-cover-to-pan rubber gasket. (My son's 4.7L hemi does not have that thank goodness!)
