Well the duster's up for the year what I would like to know what you think . I have about 800 miles on new 408 I will will be replacing the oil before it gets to frick'in cold I have been running oil with Zinc would it be to soon to change over to regular oil? or go back to oil with zinc!

Thanks for input

Unless you're running a roller cam, you best run a good oil with ZDDP if you want that thing to last. ALL oil had zinc in it back when cars had flat tappets.

Thanks Iron mike, could you educate me on what ZDDP is this is my first new total rebuild and what I was told was run oil with zinc until 1000 miles then go to regular oil. but I do want it to last!!!!

THANKS

You can get break in oil with the zinc in it. Ethier add a bottle of break in fluid or get 5 quarts with zinc in it. Replace the oil brfore starting it up in the spring.

Whats the deal with todays cams? I put an old cam I had lying around sence 91 in my motor around 98. Have never added any zinc and have never had a proublem. Am I just lucky or are todays cams junk?

It's between the quality of oil and spring pressures that wipe cams out among other things.

rumblefish you would follow the break'in period of 1000 miles? then change to regular oil.

Thanks

What I do is upon start up, break in cam for 30 min.'s, change oil/filter.

Run engine again and tune in carb/distibutor and go for a few rides around town easy like., Change oil/filter.

Then again @ about 1,000 miles, then every 3000 miles until I have all leaks and other (If any) adjustments done and corrected to my likeing.

I'll make the move to sysnth around 10,000 miles or sooner and stay with that.

Thanks rumblefish360 I also changed oil at cam break in and twice since then due to finding the right carb settings, i thought during this time frame you could not change the oil enough to insure good oil. thats another thing i learned from this site,so if i read your post correct you still ran oil with zinc well after 1000 miles?
