Hi all, I will be bringing a recently purchased 727 tranny to a speedshop to rebuild. I have found a Torque converter near where I live that seems a good deal. It's a TCI #142200 3,000-3600 stall. My car will have a 3;91 8 3/4 rear end and a (eventually) built 360 at around 400 HP. Is this a good choice for my build?

TCI
Total Crap Inside.
I would look elsewhere, my personal opinion.
PTC, COPE, FTI.
You get what you pay for.
NO BOSS HOG!!! A decendant of GER, the single WORST speed part I have bought in fifty years.

If the price is right try it and see.
Depending on your camshaft duration/powerband it Might be more stall than you need for a street car but if you like burnouts it will help you there.

I cannot agree that TCI is a crap converter. At all. Their whole transmissions need a lot of help. TCI builds a good converter. That's been my direct experience. What I would be concerned with is, if it is tight enough. Just because it has a stall range that seems to match your combination doesn't mean it's a good match. For a street car, you'll need a tight converter. One that drives around town like a stock converter but flashes to the stall you need on launch. I would call TCI and give them the product number and see what they say.

I have a FTI and PTC.. i also sent the FTI one back to have it redone to 3800... FTI is one of the best companies i have dealt with, and super nice people. I would buy from them again in a heartbeat..

P.S. converter makes a massive difference... spend the money.

Thanks for the advice everybody. I will leave it up to the tranny guy to decide and give the converter a pass for now. It just came up on local facebook marketplace and seemed like a deal at $600 Cdn. Bigbucks to ship anything that heavy up to Canada.

naw.. don't pay more than 300or so for a used one.. it's a crap shoot no matter the brand, keep and eye out for hughes ones, they show up all the time at least here... Probably not so much in Regina though... Could be worse.. at least you aren't in Wullerton...

(this joke is for 2 people here tops...)

You get what you pay for. A used converter on a fresh build is not a good idea! Precision Torque converters in new Hampton if your on a budget. I purchased a 10" with anti ballooning plate in the high 2000's range for less than $500. 9 1/2" Lupo (Dynamic converters) for a trans brake application that I foot brake with for $1600. 4700 stall, and it could be street driven on the weekends. Absolutely love the Lupo unit!

Call Paul at Turbo Action (Cheetah) he may know where there is a "J" converter.

600 cdn$ ($450 US) would be a good deal for a new one.
I wouldn't pay that for a used one.
What is the actual diameter?
I would buy a 9" 3500
I wouldn't give twenty cents for a 11 inch 3500.

Edit: in the summit add, it says that tci is 11 inches. Nnnnooooooo!!!!

You're probably right.
Last converter I bought was built to order for my car by a well respected but small one man converter shop for my pg/trans brake. (Local guy, Munsinger)
It cost a taste over $500, 5200 stall, picked my car up 2.5 tenths, 3 mph in the eighth. The mph improvement was an unexpected pleasant surprise!
Today $850 for an FTI or PTC is a deal I would happily jump on. I figure my converter would be $1200 today. (If not quite a bit more!).

Ask each manufacturer how "tight" it is. If one is a 9, the other a 10, I know which I'd chose.
The 5200 converter was for a primarily strip car, that was driven to IN-N-OUT or Carl's occasionally. Drove okay on the street, cause of a 4.57 rear gear.

That is a cool car :) mine are so tight you can't even tell they stall til you really jump on it... 4.30s in the back.. block is being worked on this week (so i'm told) haven't picked a cam yet.. am thinking of having johnson spec it, just a street car but want it to run good

If they are both that tight, I'd opt for the bigger one automatically. I've got approximately 4500 in both my street strip cars (62 Savoy and 454 Opel).

yeah, i figured i would do that anyway.. plus the 3200 will be easier to sell to sane people :) starting to get eager for spring.. hoping my block gets done eventually.. been 8 months now

If its a "NEARLY NEW, SELDOM USED" used converter, you have no idea on it's internal condition. Converters are a product that until you cut them open, it's internal condition is unknown. Yes, it has had the rattle can paint job, and maybe some 400 grit sand paper to make the hub look new, but, that maybe all that was done to it so it could be sold. I sent you a private message, but not sure if it was sent. Let me know. Meanwhile, here is what a used converters internals may look like. Used converters in my experience are good for two things, a door stop or a core. Again, just my opinion having worked in the converter industry.

I will give that converter a hard pass and see what the local tranny guy says. Didn't get your PM. The speed shop that is doing my diff has a guy they send all their trannys to. Not even sure if the 727 I bought is rebuildable. from an older 60's Dodge truck and in a barn for years. Will drop it off later in the week.
