I just bought a rebuilt 600HP trans, I was wondering what trans fluid to put in it. My buddy says Valvoline ATF +4, I only plan to use it on the street, might take to the track once or twice to see what it will do, but not interested in racing at all. It will be a good street car, but should mention I'm in Tx where the heat gets to 105+ in the Summers. I do have a deep pan and a trans cooler to help out.

    Oh, and what brand?

      Castro’s makes a really nice atf+4 I use.
I also have used in Chrysler automatics Allison atf used in big trucks 2004 and newer. Works great, loves the heat and shifts are crisp and clean.
Expensive too, like $12 per quart but a really nice product. Transynd. Is the name and it is a full synthetic. Big trucks pulling 400-1000hp and loaded upto 80,000lbs go 100,000miles on it.

Mind tellin us what transmission it is? If it's a Torqueflite of any kind, all you really need is Dexron III.

Curious, what is a 600 hp transmission ? I would think if it was done professionally that it would have cost $$$ and the builder would have told you what to use if for no other reason than to CYA. He knows what brand and quality of parts were used. Or should.

I still run type F , recommended by the builder of my currant 727. We ran type F in the hemi for 14 yrs. , and that trans saw extreme abuse . ???

Any atf+4 is synthetic. I use type F in my 727 for last 12 years, getting ready to rebuild another 727 and going to use type F. Use whatever type you want, Just make sure you don't mix trans fluid types and you should be good.

Believe it or not I use 303 hyd fluid. Caught it on a racing thread. No issues so far and it stays really clean. Price is right also. Used in farm equipment around $40 for 5 gallons. Only thing I do not like is it is clear and a bitch to see on the dipstick.

I wonder when they will stop making conventional fluids? Last summer the 904 needed a top up and I had to go buy some. Not as easy to find anymore as you might think.
Not to hijack but what's a good synthetic for the 904?

Looks like it's ATF +4 for me. Walmart has Valvoline cheaper by 0.14 cents/qt than the NAPA brand. NAPA says their house brand is Valvoline in disguise. I'm goin' to Walmart. lol

I called the Chrysler dealer a while back for some Mopar ATF4. He said in no uncertain terms, “don’t buy it from us, it’s the same product for more money with a big blue M on it” Also said F type would work fine, but again don’t mix them. This was for a 67 727 fwiw

303 fluid is transmission fluid, so it will work. That spec is obsolete by decades, though, so avoid using the cheapest fluids that claim to meet the 303 spec. They may or may not, but since no one has tested to validate the 303 spec for many years, who knows? Using a modern, current spec, backwards compatible tractor fluid will probably do the job.

Went with Valvoline +4. It was only 6.48 at Wally World, NAPA house brand, which they say is Valvoline in a NAPA bottle is $7 down here.

You bought what you bought, and It will be fine, but I'll throw my two cents in...because i was wondering the same thing and googled for info., and because the speed shop I tried to purchase B & M Trick-shift fluid, (I had a Trans-Pack shift kit installed during the rebuild years ago and that's what was recommended, but it's basically "F" type i think), could not get it any where...even from Summit. Two weeks later i'm searching for what the heck I should use instead, Ha! (decided against "F" type)
It seems like anything will work, the trans doesn't know the difference, it's just lube. Many say "F" is good for the track, grabs better, but others say it will ware the clutches faster, but?
Many said, ATF-4 is good for the newer trans with overdrive, but you only need Dexron 3 if it's an old TF-727 3 speed.
And last but not least, (and surprised no one mentioned it here in this discussion), Dexron 6 full synthetic.
Many said, our Mopars are Mopars...not Fords, and need Dexron.
Quite a few people liked/are using The Dextron-6 and their trans. seems to like it. And others said it's a waist of $'s
I decided to go with Valvoline Dexron-6, I'm still in the mid of the oil change, but will be dumping it in tomorrow. So guess I'll find out soon if it was the right call.
PS: others say KY & astro-glide is the best! ;)

Correct. Trick Shift says right on the back label that it complies with Type F specs. That's all it is. Type F.

kind of, sort of, half ass listening ;)...at least i went with dexron. posted these torque specs on another post just a bit ago, and noticed "the Book" states; "fill with Dexron-type ATF fluid" further down the paragraph. DSCF4922.JPG

In my 727, I use Royal Purple's ATF, and a B&M 11" plate oil cooler in addition to the cooling from my radiator. I want to keep temps down.
