hey everybody I have my 75 dodge dart swinger I bought a while back
My main problem is that I found out the first time that I drove it that all the gears work, but driving it sucks.
It’s a slant 6 automatic but I don’t know what trans it is specifically.
My problem is that it drives, BUT it doesn’t go into the next gear. Rather exceeds to like 30 MPH and then acts like it WANTS to go into 2nd but doesn’t go in completely like a regular automatic trans would do so, also the cars been sitting for a long time and it’s not serviced yet. Anything I should do ? Is the trans a goner ? How do I identify it ? Any tips . The trans gonna cost more than the car FML ‍♂️

have you checked the transmission fluid level?

low fluid can cause exactly that issue.

also, if it's been sitting it's a good idea to give it a comprehensive tune up. that should include a trans service.

^^^^^
Remember to check the fluid level just like the book says,,with the transmission in Neutral .
It should read out like that on the dip stick as well .

It will not check correctly in Park !

Will be checking it’s level and the needed amount and it’s checkup to servicing it
And when you pull the dipstick to check the level, look at the color of the fluid and smell it. It should be fairly clear red colored and not burned or scorched smelling. You may just need a fluid and filter change. If you don't know how it might be a good time to take it to someone that knows. They can do a banc and linkage adjustment. That might tune it up to work well again.

Got it thanks I’ll get a quick check hopefully just the oil itself

also, if you haven't done so already, get thee over to mymopar.com and download a factory service manual!

a lot of your questions can be answered with that and there's invaluable information in there. study it. live it. love it. be it.
