Having one of our every 3-5 year tree-bustin' ice storms on Afton Mtn in VA, with almost 1/2" of ice on everything. Road's blocked right now; generator and wood stove going. Had a mature oak tree break 15-20 years ago in the front yard, right in the trunk, and it sounded like a howitzer going off on the front porch; been hearing a few of those 'reports' around the NF beside us in the last few hours. Can't wait for the wind to pick up this coming AM.....

I was dragging limbs while a neighbor was cutting a tree up on the local road 2 hours ago.... we heard a treetop above us start to break... we both just ran in the opposite direction. Think I'll stay inside with a roof the break the fall over my head 'til things melt tomorrow. The cars get to fend for themselves.

Todays forecast here called for 4" of snow max.

After I removed 10-12 inches from the driveway, they changed it to 7 inches max.

Go figure.

Stay in, stay warm & stay safe.

Forecast here updated - again. Our freezing rain is yet to come..........

Had a similar storm, it was heavy wet snow. 6 years ago.
Co-workers in the park campground decided to get out when the breaking trees was like a popcorn popper.
They barely made it out.
We spent a month plus cleaning up.
We put up the wood from the campground to be processed, forestry came and estimated the stockpile at 450 cords. The brush piles were massive, burned for weeks...

Ice 1/2” thick would be heavy and to take down big oaks is crazy.

im right here at the bottom of it, just rain here! but to west and north its a ice glazed mess! martinsville news showing crews out clearing trees off us58 not 30 minutes away a bottom of lovers leap an medows of the dan!!

I was just saying to my wife I ready to move south to get away from the snow. Guess I have to go pretty far south. We have about 4 or 5" so far.

Well, don't move here...LOL. (Western VA in the Blue Ridge Mtns.) Some years, little snows. Then a good sized nor'easter comes up the coast between mid Feb and early March, and we get a dump of 24-30" every 5 years or so.

So far: Might have one rally car with a cracked windshield; a small tree top on the snowmobile trailer; ham antenna on the roof had it's fiberglass support pole snap in 2; driveway blocked. This is as bad as we have seen in 30 years here... hoowie. Beats the snot out of a big hurricane on the coast though!

The 'ice' part of the storm did not amount to much here, just lots of snow.

This pic^^ looks very familiar. We had an ice storm a few years back, (maybe 12 yrs. or so), the continuous breaking of limbs was constant , sounded like a war .
It was bad, power was off two weeks, two days to get a car out from under the carport/due to trees down, couldn`t go anywhere anyway!.
A lot of the trees have died, and the rest still shows the signs of the storm. I got insurance money for holes in the roof and fence repair/$2600 on the fence alone!
