Troubleshooting stumble at idle in gear

-
I'd start by raising the unloaded idle to 1000 rpm, isn't the stock spec 1200?

why would it be 1200 because of the load when put into drive on the auto trans? does it drop down to 850-900 when in drive?

So I bothered to look it up and the spec for a later 225 (based on OP's avatar) calls for 750. But then this isn't a stock set up. For comparison the spec for a 1970 318 is 700, but for a 340 it's 900.

I'm also curious if you (OP) are using gas with ethanol and if so are you using an additive to protect your carb and tank?

I set the idle at 750 (in Park) per the 1974 fender sticker. I realize that might not be optimal in the current build, with modern fuel etc, but I don't know of any reason to change it. Anyway, it's been running well for the last couple of weeks. There's still a slight hiccup when it's idling in gear, and I plan to continue troubleshooting that (had to buy a new timing light when my old one quit lighting up). But it's not stalling at all.
